Dead Malls: Century III Mall of West Mifflin

Dead malls you ask? Why would you want to go to an empty mall, well as you'll read here, you will find out my reasons.

This is one of many chapters in my retail apocalypse/dead mall expose, I guess you could say. Today is on a mall that is pretty near and dear to my heart. I took this mall for granted back in the day when I was a preteen in marching band, stopping at this mall on the way to a competition and spending hours exploring the stores and the mall's many floors.

Here's my most favorite dead mall of all time so far, just because of her history. Century 3 Mall, located in West Mifflin, PA. I took these pictures between the months of October 2018 and November 2018 when I visited this mall in it's lifeless state. You could walk into that mall, and it was like she was begging for a mercy kill.

Back in the early 80s and 90s this mall was booming; three floors, about 2 million square feet of retail space. It was the place to be in those days.

But in the early 2000s until the mall's ultimate closure in early 2019,
it wasn't the place to be.

People in the area were losing disposable income, strip malls were popping up like mad...

... and online shopping took a presence.

Also, in the Pittsburgh, PA area alone there are already half a dozen malls.

You can Google search for Century 3 mall and see pictures of it with it's fountains full and running, decorations for the holidays, full of people bustling about and shopping.

But here's the real reason why I do this. I love dead malls just because I can spot out most store fronts and see what they used to be before their demise.

I love the architecture in some of these malls, especially the ones built in the 70s and 80s that have yet to be remodeled or revamped somehow.

There's a certain feeling you get when you walk into an empty space and you think of it crowded and full of people.

Mindy loves to explore these old retail spaces. When she has more to share, we will post it here! Do you also explore Dead Malls? Leave a message in the comments!
