First steps:
- I started with the basics. Raised the temperature a bit, the presence and created a nice contrast.

Already so much better, isn't it? Now let's play around with the tone curve, shall we? What I really enjoy doing is lifting the blacks - this will give it that 'film look'. After that, make a nice 'S' curve.
The tone curve is easier than you think. Just play around with it until you get the result you were looking for. This is wat I came up with:

And split toning.
For final adjustment I raised the exposure just a bit.
