Ghostly Reflective Nebula in the Pleiades

in #photography7 years ago

This image shows a dark interstellar cloud illuminated by Merope, one of the brightest stars in the star cluster of the Pleiades. Just like the torch beam illuminates the cave walls, the star reflects light from the surface of pitch-black clouds of cold gas. Since the nebula is not far from Merope, strong stellar light slows the movement of dust particles. The nebula drifts through the cluster at a relative speed of about 11 kilometers per second.
