You can try it still on a normal camera, just the exposure times increase and the image may lack a little quality but still possible. You will need a tripod for all photos if its not modified.

You would figure out what size filter you can place on your lens. And then go on Amazon to buy a set of them, they usually come in a few different wavelengths like 720 nm, 850 nm and 950 nm. Those give you different looks as they isolate different light wavelengths.

You got to set your white balence when the filters on, or your image will be all red or something like that. I use white/gray cards but you can set it to your hand, green grass or a piece of paper in a pinch.

Is this got any different result than having it in post to drop Green/Blue channels to 0?

Yeah you can correct the white balance in post too, though I like to set it as close as possible with my cameras sensor and then do an auto white balance again in GIMP (A free photo editing program) post.
