Shooting White Cliffs on the Grand Staircase in Utah

in #photography7 years ago (edited)

The White Cliffs of Escalante Grand Staircase and the Paria River that cuts from Bryce Canyon all the way to the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon are a wonderful place to explore.

I made a film about this area and one place in particular, the infamous "Hole in the Wall". One of the many locations of the same name used by the outlaw Butch Cassidy.

An interesting thing about the image above, this is Deer Springs Wash which flows up into the White Cliffs in the distance. Where the two forks meet in the foreground, notice the slight lightly colored circular depression? That is an archeological site where they discovered the remains of an small Anasazi era roundhouse with an adjacent livestock pen. And inside were the remains of a 60+ year old man who had simply laid down and died.

I find is somewhat comforting to know that over 1,000 years ago someone lived here. I would have loved it!

This is from my ongoing project in which I am trying to raise awareness of the 47% of the USA and 90% of Canada that remain unpopulated wilderness.

Where Eagles Fly - The American Wilderness Expedition is my personal mission to introduce people to these amazing locations that surround us.

If you are interested in helping with this project I would love to have your assistance!

Very beautiful! Utah is so pretty.

Very beautiful picture. Hope to visit there one day.

Amazing shots, I have a friend I need to show this to, he's always been interested in Butch Cassidy.

On another topic, ever see anything "odd" in the sky while flying in these remote areas? 👽

Thanks! Yes, I have seen some pretty interesting things both in the air and on the ground!

I would love to see a post of all these things skypilot! Please tag me if you decide to make a compilation of them.

Hi Zed. I love flying around with you on your videos. The scenery is amazing. There is a Hole in Wall Tennessee, too. I don't know the story tho as to why they call it that.In my 20s (1980s) I flew in a crop duster with a crazy pilot!! We went straight up and then straight down and he turned the engine off. I thought I was going to die!!!! Then while he was laughing at me he cranked back up and we went back up. Then the idiot flew UNDER the Tennessee River Bridge on the Natchez Trace. I again thought I was going to die!!! However, I was laughing in relief when we landed safely. I wanted to hit him but I was happy to be on the ground. Never flown again. The next time I fly it will be in angels wings!!! I enjoy watching your videos tho.

Wow thanks for this awesome reply!! What a story!! I know exactly where that bridge is!! I grew up in southern Tennessee / northern Alabama.

Really? Small world!!! Yep, it's quite the story and quite the memory!! The man I was dating at the time always kidded me about it. He stayed on the ground! lol He just recently passed away.....I don't know what happened to the pilot. The last I heard he got arrested for trafficking coke. Only in Alabama. lol
