Windows : Step by step towards a more efficient Bern station
Bern station has reached the limits of its capacity, with people packed tightly together on the platforms and squeezing through the passageways, while trains come and go in rapid succession. Expansion work is now being planned so that it can continue to fulfil its functions and serve as a transport hub in future.
The new incarnation of Bern station will be bigger, lighter and friendlier – and more attractive as a result. Its platforms and passageways are being enlarged, providing more space for passengers. The connecting routes around the station, into the city and to the tram and bus stops are also set to be overhauled, making them shorter and easier to use. The new RBS station will also enable RBS to further expand its S-Bahn services.
Two major expansion phases are in the pipeline. Between now and 2025, SBB and RBS will be working on two large projects:
By 2025, there will be a new RBS station and a new additional SBB underpass, the “Mitte” underpass, with a second main entrance in the Bubenberg Centre and an entrance from the Länggasse area. The City of Bern will also be reorganising the traffic arrangements around the station and in the neighbouring districts in conjunction with this expansion work.
SBB plans to expand the station out to the sides by 2035. This will include four additional platforms under the “Grosse Schanze”, enabling further expansion of regional and long-distance services.
Work began in 2017.
