Bekman Max (German Max Beckmann, February 12, 1884, Leipzig - December 27, 1950, New York) is a German artist, one of the greatest masters of the interwar period of the 20th century, an outstanding portraitist.
In the 1920's. was close to the new materiality, in the 1930s. came to a tragic expressionistic manner, bringing him closer to the masters of the northern Middle Ages, the works of Bosch, Brueghel, Grunewald, Rembrandt, Cezanne, Van Gogh. Revived the genre of the medieval triptych. Illustrated the New Testament, Goethe's Faust, "Notes from the Dead House" by F. M. Dostoevsky, and others.
