•Malibu Pier Extended•
By: Wilkof Photography I spent most of my first 2 weeks in California splitting my time between the Malibu Coast and Mulholland Drive. While I had a lot of difficulty shooting Mulholland because I had very little experience with hazy conditions, Malibu Pier was always a winner for me. As I've mentioned a few times I think, I knew nothing about this place at the time and for most, it's probably an afterthought. There's no real beach area at the pier but past it is the lagoon portion which is where most of the beachgoers end up. The pier itself is very short and in the bottom 5 in California in length. There's a really calm, serene feeling whenever I've been here and standing on the rocky embankment gives you just enough height to get an interesting perspective. Since arriving here in late December, I've probably taken over 1,000 shots from about here to a similar distance on the other side and never get tired of it. For a few months, this entire area was closed off and under heavy construction and I really missed shooting here. It did however, give me a good chance to explore a bit more in both directions and helped me find a few of my other favorite locations. This was a 2 frame horizontal panorama and I was lucky to match these up at all. I shot 4 or 5 frames of the right side of the pier and the surf and just 1 of the actual pier for some reason. Fortunately I found a decent match from the set. Scotch was with me this day and since we left at sunrise, he was sleeping by my feet during the majority of this trip. It was also the last time I dragged him along for a shoot. After this, we headed up into Topanga Canyon in the dense fog and rain and I think he finally decided he'd rather retire and hang out at home. By: Wilkof Photography During that amazing day back in late January at Venice Beach, I spent nearly the entire time focused on long exposures and reflections at the shoreline. I hovered between the pier and the rocks that separate Venice Beach from Santa Monica Beach. I don't practice panoramas much and as a result, the process always feels very cumbersome. Shooting vertically on a tripod feels like writing left handed and since my viewfinder doesn't seem to rotate with the camera, all the manual settings and focus had to be done sideways. Normally, I seem to shoot about a half dozen sets of shots that I hope will merge later when I go out, and it's never a focus for me. This day wasn't much different and of the 270 or so images I shot, maybe 20 total were shot with panoramas in mind. The light, sky and tide were great all afternoon but the light kept getting more and more vibrant with each passing minute as the sunset got closer. I pretty much stayed right about here for over an hour before focusing on that crimson sky seen in a few other of my posts. My original plan for this was to find a shutter speed that would keep a lot of the details in the sky but get rid of the waves so I could match the photos easier. I shot 3 horizontal panels and while all 3 did line up, the 3rd panel was just not right so I ditched it. In retrospect, a longer exposure time and a few more shots at each frame would've been helpful but I was pleased with the results. One of these days I need to just head out with the sole intention of practicing panoramas until it clicks for me. By: Wilkof Photography The previous post was from my favorite night of shooting in California (and perhaps anywhere) and this was is as well, only about 16 minutes later and facing the other direction. I was thrilled after arriving when I realized the long sloping shore and low tide made for perfect reflections. I had never shot a reflection before and didn't have much to go on so I did a mix of both long and short exposures for the next few hours. As I shot, the sky became more and more vibrant and the intensity of the sunset was unlike anything I've ever seen. The colors changed rapidly and the concentrated crimson sky in the previous post seemed to appear out of nowhere and faded not too long after. For about a half hour, people slowly gathered around the area I was shooting, watching the sky and taking videos and photos with their phones. After the crimson began to fade away, the people left and I was all alone on the beach again, shooting until the last dot of color was gone from the sky. A bit of that fiery red is still visible in the far right and the colors were still very bold at this point, but it wasn't long after this that the only light between me and the pier was the the flashlight on my phone and the planes overhead. I arrived here in no hurry and with very little expectations other than the hope for a nice sunset and a new place to shoot. I ended up being the last person to leave the beach and I returned a half dozen times over the next month hoping for a repeat sky that never came. •Bursts Of Sunset•
By: Wilkof Photography My last trip to Point Mugu featured an amazing sky and I ended up trying to figure out the best ways to capture the impressive sunbeams bursting through the clouds. I had been here for hours shooting both horizon and shoreline long exposures and was hoping to get a mixture of both long and short captures at sunset. Long Exposure is what I find to be the most relaxing type of photography for me. I really enjoy framing and focusing the shot how I want and then sitting back to enjoy the view while the bulb is open. I end up having to spend very little time looking at the incredible surroundings through the viewfinder. Conversely, [attempts at] panoramas drives me crazy. I've tried to figure them out on my own through trial and error like everything else, but it just hasn't clicked for me yet. I hate shooting on a tripod in portrait and I hate that the manual settings on my viewfinder won't tilt to portrait. When I shoot in portrait for panoramas, I typically end up panning each frame too close together and making the the focal length a bit too short as well. When I shoot in landscape, I end up with the opposite problems (not enough zoom and too many frames) which creates an ultra wide panorama. This photo is actually a 4 shot vertical stitched panorama even if maybe it doesn't look like it. I was having a lot of trouble from this vantage on a cliff lining up the camera in vertical and keeping it level enough to match up later in post. I shot one series in portrait and one series in landscape and went back to the long exposures. A storm is brewing
By: NikolajAlexanderPics While visiting the TV Tower in Kuala Lumpur we could see a storm approaching. On the right side of the picture it was already heavily raining. However on the left side the sun was still shining. Within a few minutes the Petronas Towers were covered completely with clouds and it started heavily to rain. Luckily we decided to stay a bit longer to see the storm from the top. Great experience. |

By: Wilkof Photography Both times I headed to the beach side of Point Mugu, I was treated with cloudy skies, varying winds and different sunsets. When I use the 10 stop filter during the day at the ocean, I seem to slightly underexpose the shot, regardless of exposure time. This isn't always intentional but helps me keep details in the sky I might otherwise lose. I still play around with the 10 stop using both a circular polarizer on the end or without and while it's tougher to color correct when I use both (actually, I have trouble with color correction on a lot of the longer exposure water shots), I think the results are often interesting. On this trip, the waves were smaller and the tide a bit lower so I shot much closer to the sea than I originally intended. When I returned the second time, this rock was getting battered by waves and I most likely would've been washed off it along with my gear had a lifeguard not told me to stay a bit farther back than I was when she first found me. There is still one area I haven't climbed down to yet and perhaps next time I'll finally make my way there. The cove that's visible in a few previous posts is the area and as long as the tide level is manageable, I intend to do it. •The Beautiful Frustration•
By: Wilkof Photography I've made it no secret that I started manual photography from complete scratch less than 2 years ago and took the same approach to photo editing starting not long after. I like to think my photostream shows both my growth and stumbles in an organized, mostly chronological progression. Learning through trial and error has always felt like the most enjoyable approach, though being unprepared for some situations has obviously cost me many shots I can't get back. I see shots from the past that have absurd setting choices, mainly because I didn't know better nor what each component to a shot was. I imagine it's very similar to trying to learn a musical instrument before you can read music. At that point, it's all memorization without learning. Often I got lucky with results, though my technique was tedious. Once I had my subject, it was more quantity vs quality. I figured i was more likely to get the result I wanted with a large group to choose from rather than take the time to try and properly shoot a small handful of well composed shots. I'd almost argue that the photo editing process has been more of a challenge than photography for me. Without any understanding of lightroom and photoshop, many of the most basic tasks are either too complicated or completely unknown. Photoshop Elements 10 was my first purchased software and I remember how foreign it seemed. Then I transitioned to lightroom and photoshop CC which was night and day to my old copy of Elements and most recently, started to incorporate some of the NIK software now that it's available for free. For me, the biggest joy is when I get home to review a shoot and think "wow, that's straight out of the camera". The feeling of getting a mostly technically correct image and knowing it won't take much to get it to what my eyes were seeing. My biggest frustrations though through this journey have been the roundabout way I edit and the issue of getting what I see in lightroom or photoshop to be how it looks on the internet. More often than not, the clean finished project I see turns into a bit of a mess. The colors don't match, the smoothness in the long exposure seem like they've been switched with color noise and banding. Images I think are wonderful become drafts I don't feel I can post. Because of this, I end up agonizing over my process, essentially doing a few tiny edits at a time before I save the image as a draft and upload to a flickr edit album to review and compare and then repeat again and again until dozens of drafts later when I'm either finally satisfied with how it looks on my screen, iphone and tablet or I move on to the next image frustrated. Each time I figure something out, there's a wave of excitement as I think of all the images I stashed away for when I knew how to edit them correctly. This image isn't perfect but it represents the solution for another simple error I didn't understand how to fix or even what the issue actually was. I've asked some people why many of my long exposures don't look the same on flickr and a few other online destinations as they do in lightroom and photoshop, and it's often hard to explain the issues since I don't know a lot of the terminology or how to accurately convey the problem. Different monitors, auto glare dimmers, incorrect color profiles. It often feels like the draft that I like in lightroom looks to contain 10% of the clarity and correctness everywhere else. On my editing screen, the colors seemed great, I didn't have any of the horrible banding or patches of irregular color but on flickr, it was an absolute mess. My photoshop defaults on "CMYK" under proof setup so I switched it to "monitor RGB". Next, I saved an image as a draft under the default save settings and then resaved the same draft but unclicked the default checked box for "embed color profile" and hit save. The first saved draft, as expected, seemed like a low quality version of my finished image (like watching an HD channel on TV but getting a SD picture instead). The second draft with the embed color profile unchecked was much much closer to being correct. The weird patches of color often in shadows or color transitions were truer and nearly gone. I honestly don't know what the settings before really meant and I'm not quite sure why it's working better from a technical point, but it is. It's really frustrating that there would be default settings that would have such a major negative impact on my work, especially since photoshop is so complicated with no background in it. It feels like I'm trying to learn something totally new to me in a foreign language I don't know. Learning photography from scratch has been an amazing process for me so far, both in terms of seeing my skill and post improve but also my ability to to understand why I'm doing something instead of just getting lucky. The harmony between my photography skill level and editing skill level are rarely in sync and sometimes I end up with a cache of images that i set aside for when the editing catches up. Everytime I refine or learn a new and/or substantial editing skill, my first move is to go back to some of the old images and see if I finally solved the problems I was having. Sometimes they're resolved, other times they're closer but still not to my satisfaction. Anyway, just wanted to share this story and experience since it seems there's an awful lot of people out there like me who are in the process of learning from scratch and come across obstacles that are both frustrating and frustratingly simple fixes. I still have a lot of anxiety when something doesn't immediately click or what felt like a successful shoot turns doesn't end up that way upon review. I'd love to hear some experiences and stories from other self taught photographers in regards to these hurdles and/or breakthroughs both in terms of shooting and editing. By: Wilkof Photography My trip to Point Mugu on Monday was much more interesting than the first time, in large part to me being on the other side of the rock. I entered from the beach and climbed down the rocky embankment towards the sea, doing my best to stay just out of reach of any ocean spray. I mainly focused on the areas that were partially submerged but after about an hour, I decided I wanted to see what was on the other side of the rock formations. The slab of rock I had been standing on gently lowered into the water by my feet but it was pretty shocking and confusing when I backed up about 20ft and found myself at the edge of a cliff high above the crashing water below. My brain expected to see the same rock angle into the sea but my eyes saw something much different. I'm not very comfortable in the ocean nor a fan of heights (the former being a gross understatement). From my position, it felt like an optical illusion. One side I was sea level and the other side a dramatic drop high above the water. When I was getting ready to leave just as the overcast sky began to set, I decided to climb up above where I was to get a better understanding of my surroundings. At the top of a ridge that wrapped around Point Mugu, I could see how far of a drop there was and a bit more of the topography. I immediately thought of those scenes in movies where a tight camera crop on someone seems normal until the frame pans out to show them in a very precarious place. I snapped a few long exposures a few feet from the edge with an unsettling breeze swirling around me and decided I was ready to go. Of course, the area I was standing on is out of frame just to the right and that's OK with me. The real name of Pierre Loti, who lived in Istanbul for long years and was a real Istanbul lover, was Julien Viaud.The historical cafe is the most ideal place to watch this mentioned view. It is said that, in those years Pierre Loti used to come this cafe often, named as “Rabia Kadın Kahvesi†in those years, and write his novel “Aziyade†overlooking Golden Horn.Today, this district, still kept as an original Turkish settlement by being restorated, consists of many spaces serving as a tourist facility.The district is also mentioned in Evliya Çelebi’s Seyahatname ( travel book) as “Idris Köşkü Mesiresiâ€. There are many historical artifacts and building in Pierre Loti, commonly visited by tourists and travelers who come to Istanbul in 19th century. Double-epigraphed, wooden “KaÅŸgari Tekkesiâ€, dated 1813 and located on the way from the tourist facility to Eyüp Mosque, is one of these structures.Another important Persian-epigraphed building, at the right corner of the service area and located at a trivium, is “Çolak Åžeyh Hasan Türbesi.†A part of this building is çilehane(çilehane is a place in which a dervish undergoes and suffers to strength his patience.) and Çolak Hasan Dede’s grave is here too.The historical building, on the same way with “Çolak Åžeyh Hasan Tekkesiâ€, is “Sıbyan Mektebi†or a nursery school in today’s context. (Today, that school is used as a prayer room that belongs to the service area.)The grave of a whirling dervish called “Iskender Dedeâ€, passed away in 1589,takes place in Pierre Loti Tourist Facility located forefront Sıbyan Mektebi that was built by Ottoman history writer Ä°dris-i Bitlisi.One of the two water wells infront of Iskender Dede is the famous “Dilek Kuyusu†(a water well for wishes) Evliya Çelebi writes about this water well in his Seyahatname and says: the people who look in to the well, can see their own wishes they keep in their hearts. There is also a drinking fountain next to the frontage of Sıbyan Mektebi.In addition, a cistern, supposed to be built in Byzantine period, survives in the middle of the garden area in the tourist facility. |

I've also been really enjoying telephoto work lately. I feel more like a master of the scene really, and the result always ends up being unique. What's really made my new telephoto work possible are the tight blend lines on the new LEE Filters "Very Hard" graduated filters. At telephoto lengths having a tighter blend line is crucial for accurate positioning. I did something interesting with the filters to take this image. I reversed one of the two graduated filters to darken the water from the bottom up, both grads blending to clear in the center. The filters I used for this 6 minute exposure are listed below. More Than Meets The Eye
By: Tim van Zundert Or, "All for Nothing # 6". Another shot from the very top of the 'Canton Tower'. For a time, it was only me and my best mate at what felt like the top of the world. It was pretty thrilling- although I wasn't able to enjoy it 'in the moment', as I felt that I needed to take these photographs quickly before anyone got in the way or the cloud rolled in. Boo. Looking at these shots now brings me some warmth, however. I had wanted to start at the top (from up here) and work our way down to get different photographs from different heights and angles but, it turned out that we had used all of our time at the very top. It was quite depressing, missing out on everything else. Then... A very, very long walk home feeling sad. And getting sore feet. •A Mugu Point Of View•
By: Wilkof Photography Here's another shot I took at Point Mugu Beach at the very end of Malibu, California right off of the Pacific Coast Highway. I could see this rocky group from my GPS map and immediately made my way over here after I parked. The light outside was brighter than it seemed though perhaps it was just the angle it was hitting me from this position. I figured the 10 stop neutral density filter would be dark enough to allow me to stretch shutter speeds out longer though it became a bit uncessessary to get the effects I wanted. I was wedged high between the surf below and a cutout of rocks beneath the cliff above and while I kept the gear dry (shielding it a few times from ocean spray) I didn't want to spend too much time in this spot. I had to time getting from the beach to this point to avoid the tide and it felt like I was encouraging nature to wash me out to sea.
