The Milky Way

in #photography7 years ago

Hello Steemians!

I don't know about you guys, but I have always had a huge fascination with space, the galaxy, the stars, and the constellations. There are so many questions and wonders about what is out there beyond our small blip of a planet in the solar system.

I love reading and watching documentaries about space and all the speculations, theories, and developments I digest from this.

Now that the summer months are here on the east coast of the United States, the movement of the Milky Way through the night sky is very prominent. The timing and conditions for it's visibility are more ideal for many star gazers and astro photographers this time of year than most months.

On my recent trip to Shenandoah National Park in Virginia last weekend, I had a goal of capturing the Milky Way. I have yet to successfully be able to capture its image due to bad weather, bad timing, or the moon phase. The bigger the moon, the more light it radiates hence the harder it is to see the Milky Way with the human eye.

We did some research and found that the Milky Way was rising in the south around 11 PM and would be most visible until about 2 AM. This coupled with a new moon made it ideal for me to capture.

My friend and I were excited and went out to different overlooks, and summits within the park facing south and began snapping away.

Below is a product of my first attempt at shooting the Milky Way. I hope you all enjoy the image as much as I enjoyed the leg work and execution of capturing it!

Great shot. Been trying to capture the stars as well with my FujiFilm XM1.

Thank you. Yes, it is all about the weather conditions @finkavenue once you find the right night just turn the iso up to around 1000 and do a 20-30 second long exposure!

Dude I absolutely love that picture. Space nut too lol.

Thanks! @newwayofthinking It is such a fascinating thing... so many unknowns and so much to learn!

For sure! We live in such an incredible time because technology is actually going to allow us to learn a lot about it. Just what we've learned in the last 5 years is unbelievable!

I agree, a very exciting time for space discovery @newwayofthinking
