We are all familiar with the beauty of flowers - the reproductive structure generated by about 90 percent of all living land plants. But their origin and early evolution is a mystery. This is mainly due to the lack of fossil flowers from the time period when the living flower ancestor has existed.
"The structure and organization of ancestral flowers remains mysterious," said Dr. Jason Hilton of the University of Birmingham, UK, who was not involved in the study. "For example, we do not know whether the oldest flowers are single or bisexual, or are they pollinated by wind or insects. "
