Hi there my Steemian friends and followers!
I am happy to introduce you to another interesting piece of architecture that I have seen during my travels. This time around, I will tell you something about the National Museum of Lithuania that I captured in these shots a couple of years ago.
I am sure this institution must be one of the youngest national museums in Europe as it was established as recently as in 1952 (the National Museum of my Czech homeland, for example, was founded in 1818).
Located in the center of Vilnius, the capital city of the country, the National Museum of Lithuania consists of five major departments: History, Archaeology, Ethnography, Iconography and Numismatics.
Currently a part of the Lithuanian Ministry of Culture, the museum houses approximately 800,000 items from a variety of different areas.
The red tower that you can see right behind the museum is not a part of it. The structure is known as the Upper Castle and it is situated on the top of the nearby Gediminas Hill.
The Upper Castle is a part of the famous Vilnius Castle Complex, a group of historic structures found on the left bank of the Neris River. The very origins of the complex date back 10th century.
By the way, I have also written a few posts about the National Museum in Prague mentioned above. If you want to learn more about this iconic cultural and educational institution of my country, you check out, for example, this post that also came with some cool night shots of the building ;)
