history of the city of Athens, Greece in ancient times

in #photography7 years ago

Athens is one of the oldest cities in the world, known to have been inhabited at least since 7000 years ago. Located in southern Europe, Athens became a city of excellence in ancient Greece in the first millennium BC and its cultural achievements during the 5th century BC became the foundation for western civilization.

During the Middle Ages, the city suffered a setback before then began to rise again under the Byzantine Empire and relatively affluent in the period of the Crusades (12th and 13th centuries), profiting from Italian trade. Having experienced a setback under the rule of the Ottoman Empire, Athens rose again in the 19th century as the capital of an independent Greek state.

Athena is the name of a goddess

According to ancient mythology in Greece, Athena is the name of a Goddess of Wisdom. The reason why Athens was named Athena according to mythology was then the goddess Athena and god Poseidon competed to give a name that would be a protector for the city. They did not fight in the name of who would be the name of the city. They compete by giving something to their inhabitants.
Unfortunately, giving the goddess Athena in the form of an olive tree was far more valuable than the salt springs provided by God Poseidon. Finally, the name of the goddess Athena is used as the name of this ancient city.

Athens is the oldest city in Europe

If now the city of Athens is the capital of Greece, then thousands of years ago when Ancient Greece reached its heyday, Athens is also the heart of the Ancient Greek civilization itself. In the 5th century BC, the city still dominates as a city different from the others including the Acropolis. The Acropolis is a fortified peak of a hill that is equivalent to an ancient building like a colonnade in the Parthenon shrine.

Already there since more than 7000 years ago, Athens is one of the oldest cities in Europe and even in the world. In ancient times, only Sparta and Athens grew so rapidly that it reached its heyday. No wonder this city became one of the oldest cities in Europe. This oldest city is also the cradle of democracy, western philosophy, Olympic Games, scientific politics, western literature, historiography, mathematical principles that are still used until the western theory of tragedy and comedy. It's as good as Athena to date.
