Owning a private islands is the ultimate status symbol and a fantasy of many of us as it is so often associated with the rich and famous. Richard Branson, Mel Gibson, Johnny Depp and South Africa’s own Mosima Gabriel (Tokyo) Sexwale are among these.
An island is a piece of ground which is surrounded by water. These waters separates the owners from the outside world, creating their own “kingdoms of privacy”. There are thousands of islands in the world with many of them still uninhabited. Some islands can be bought undeveloped whereby others already have some sign of humanity like houses and roads.
South Africa doesn’t have an abundance of private islands as most islands are owned by the government. Those that are available are spectacular. Stanley Island is one of them. This island is the only private owned island on the Garden Road and is situated in the Keurbooms River (lagoon), Plettenberg Bay.
Although there are 3 self-catering cottages on the island for rent it still stays a place in heaven with long stretches of private beach which ensure the privacy of guests. Boat or aeroplane is the only way that this island can be access.
This 28 hectare private island is a nature reserve with its own indigenous milkwood forest and is home to various species of birds and wild life. A must see for photographers!
Today I share my top ten photos of Stanley Island
There is a private island just off the coastline of Scotland, you can buy this private island from the British government the cost is one thousand pounds ! ! !
So US$ 1,500 will get you your very own private island, in fact on clear days you can almost see Scotland; it has been available for 50 years, yet no one buys it. EVER...
It was used for biological warfare research is is probably still deadly : )
