I've got a Canon t6i with a great 18-135mm lens but I find it too big to be tossing in my backpack. I'm looking for a new lens that's hopefully smaller, and is ideal for every day carry.
What say you photographers?

How did EDC go for you mate?
maybe he means every day carry instead of electric daisy carnival?
Nice camera you have hm i dont know which to suggest cause i just have an iphone camera to take some photos! Haha :)
Canon 24-70 f/4L is a pretty compact lens given the zoom range. 24-70 f2.8 is of course much faster, but may be a bit too bulky.
If you want something a little more towards the wider end, I second @winstonwolfe's 17-50/55 picks.
The only reason I didn't suggest this lens is because it's not a crop lens. The 24mm end of it would be equal to a 38.4. So he wouldn't be able to get the wide shots he's used to getting with that 18-135. And if he's going to EDC he's going to want that wide angle. ;-)
Since you have a crop sensor, and weight is a huge concern, I'd highly recommend you consider an EF-S mount lens. There are some extremely high quality ones that most people overlook since they don't work with full frame sensor cameras. Since they are designed to work with a smaller imaging sensor, they are able to be smaller and lighter than their EF equivalents. Here is a general purpose ones that might suit your needs.
The main downside is you'll be losing some of the focal range you're used to with your current lens, but you should see a drastic improvement in photo quality! With the high resolution of the T6i, you can crop somewhat heavily to add more zoom if you need it ;). They don't have too many EF-S lenses, but they have a macro one, a wide angle one, a telephoto one, and the one I linked to. If you're fully committed to sticking with a crop sensor for the foreseeable future, they're a great bet!
Problem is that current @nextgencrypto's lens is most probably Canon's EF-S 18-135 mm f/3.5-5.6 IS, if so, then your choice, while being a great lens is actually bigger 75.4 x 101 mm vs 83,8 x 111,7 mm.
I'd recommend the canon 50mm f1.8 prime. It's fast, sharp, small, light and cheap. You can't go wrong - one of my favourite eos lenses.
Good ol' nifty fifty. I agree about this being a great lens, as I have a copy of it as well. It's astonishing how good the results are for the cost. While it is a great lens, it presents some limitations for an event like EDC, in which case something that offers some versatility without having to change lenses might be more preferable. Also, since he's using a crop sensor body, the 50mm effectively becomes an 80mm, which can be difficult to use in situations where you can't get back far enough to get the whole picture.
20-70mm would be an great universal lens for street, portrait or normal landscape.
If you don't need to go too wide I would suggest a 24-70mm/2.8 by Sigma. It is my "always with me lens" - small, light and sharp enough it is perfect for landscapes and for portraits. It is just as sharp and flexible as the Canon version but half the price.
You will need to move around more than with your current lens but it is not a major issue. Also be careful if you are taking closeup portraits as it can make people look a bit goofy at the low focal end due to the perspective but you can reduce that by making sure you shoot level to the face - step further back, or simply just go to the max focal length for those type of shots.
If you don't want to spend that much and want something that is super sharp and affordable a good prime would be my recommendation - they are even lighter and more portable.
You can't go wrong with the Canon 50mm/1.8 or 50mm/1.4 if you can stretch to it. If you are into portraits then the Canon 85mm/1.8 is perfect (although not as cheap as the 50mm/1.8 obviously).
DM me in the chat if you want more advice I love talking about lenses.
I just bought this Nikon 16-35mm/F4 to use for my landscapes:)
You and me both. Sounds like you and I could talk all day. lol
Lol. There is degree of techno fetishism to photography I think:)
I'd say, i have no clue when it comes to photography =)
But best of luck finding a new lens
We talked in chat but most of these zoom suggestions aren't any smaller than what you've got right now. I just saw this lens exists: EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM pancake. It's super small, reviews don't say there's any huge downsides. 24mm on a 1.6x crop APS-C sensor is equivalent to about a 38mm lens on 35mm film, which is just slightly wide. If you don't mind zooming with your feet (usually the best photos are taken close to the subject), this might be your good all-around lens. If you want something slightly in the telephoto range, there's the Canon 40mm STM pancake, and the 50mm 1.8 STM lens which is a bit larger but has a wider maximum aperture.
What about a slightly bigger backpack or a separate case you can attach to your backpack with a carabiner clip?
Are you looking to keep about the same range of 18-135? I find that my main walkaround lens for a crop body tends to be more in the 17-50 range, plus you gain a nice 2.8 f-stop.
I use the Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 for this.
However, if you're looking to stick with Canon, you might consider their 17-55mm f/2.8 USM. I've heard people say that if it wasn't a crop-body lens, they probably would've made it into an L lens.
^^^That lens right there is actually scheduled to arrive at my door tomorrow from borrowlenses.com. I'll be able to give you a more accurate review of it after I shoot a wedding with it this weekend. ;-)
So I got the lens today and shot around with it a bit. It's definitely bigger than my Sigma 17-50, but it's much faster and on point with focus. Out of the two of them - if size is the deciding factor - I'd say go with the Sigma. It's got great image quality, and it's pretty small. I'm using the Canon for a wedding this weekend only because my Sigma is starting to misbehave after 5 years of service, but the Canon heavy enough that it's got me looking for my battery grip.
If you have to go with a prime lens to conserve space or make the camera smaller, I recommend going with something on the wide range, such as @pfunk's suggestion about the 24mm pancake lens. That thing is so thin it's almost not a lens at all, but more like a camera body cap.
I have an 18-55 mm lens which is compact, but versatile.
Well cannon is pretty good model atleast.
Sorry @nextgencrypto I turned the topic,
I have chosen you as a witness.

Thank you!
nifty fifty
Id say get a 35 mm prime lens or the 50mm f1.4 prime.
And forget about the zoom part.
To get the subjects close in the frame, move yourself.
The reason: once you use a prime lens of high quality, you would know the difference for yourself. :)
The difference is quality is jaw-dropping.
Have a great day. @nextgencrypto
That might be slightly off track but have you heard of the DJI Spark?
Its so small , it fits in hand, prized 500$. Lens is constantly sharp, little distortion , f/2.6 and 25mm focal length
By chance, were you just in Las Vegas for the EDC...???
People are usually exhausted by the heat... I hope you
drank lots of water... Oh wow... I just noticed you posted
this 8 months ago... lol...
@pocketechange
I don't own a Canon so I can't really suggest anything. I hope someone else can help out.

like many said, I would suggest 24-70 or another interesting choice is 17-70 from Sigma. For a long time I am nusing 24-70 though I had started with a sigma 17-70 a while back
