My mineral collection part 2, Fluorite

In the second post of this series I will introduce you to the mineral Fluorine.

It is a crystal form of a compound called calcium fluoride CaF2 .
The pure mineral is colourless but because of impurities it can have some beautiful colours (copper impurities make it green, cobalt blue).
It defines the hardness level of 4 on the Mohs scale, and it is quite brittle.

The comon uses in the industry are :

  • The use as a flux (flux is a or a mixture of additives that make iron slag flow better)

  • For the production of hydrofluoric acid

  • Jewelry and optics for special needs

In the end the photos of this mineral in my collection, enjoy.
