Solemn (geo)Graphy of Moving Landscapes
In The Poetics of Space, Gaston Bachelard presents the concept of space as a shelter of our intimacy, a shelter of our memories, projections, stories and dreams. The author points out symbols that permeate our inner and outer spaces, such as the house and drawers of our unconsciousness.
Yi Fu Tuan, based on this perspective, expands the concept of Place and Space in geography, understanding them from the perspective of experience. Thus, place is security, permanence, pause in motion, while space is freedom. Space becomes a place as we get to know it better.
It is from the experience, too, that space and time meet up, due to any memories about a place, giving us a deep feeling towards it.
"Man, as a result of his intimate experience with his body and with other people, organizes the space in order to conform it to his biological and social needs."
Tuan, Yi-fu
Thus, there is a correspondence between body and space, human anatomy and physiognomy of the earth.
We create our space and we are also created by it: we influence the places and we are influenced by them, by their geography, climate, presences and absences.
The proposal of the project "Solemn (geo)Graphy of Moving Landscapes" is to go to these spaces, unknown to the artists, in search of establishing a sensitive relationship with places, physical and symbolic, that permeate it, understanding the diversity of relationships that compose it, and expanding the idea of ‘ landscape’ for memories, people, languages, habits, looks and the TIME.
We need to be present, with a present body, for and in the world, as a perceiving body that interacts with the environment, noticing differences and points of convergence, where we recognize each other at a given time where our own personal look projects and constructs the observed image. Where the ‘being’ is included in the landscape seen.
This project aims to develop a creative and experimental process, through drawing, literature, video and photography, exploring the plastic possibilities that this relationship favors. The photographs and the video will be made with analog equipment for the manual experimentation of the negative film through techniques that approximate the desired aesthetic related to ‘memory’. This is a long-term proposal that will start in this Residency and aims to develop material for the publication of a book and the edition of a video, as well as establishing relationships between places as points on a space-time map, points in a great web.
