Ciao a tutti,
Hello everyone,
I began a Photo Journey through Italy. I will post one photo every day with a little note of explanation. I hope you like it!
Fontanellato is a small town in the province of Parma, in the Northern Italian region of Emilia Romagna; the town is located in the so called Bassa Parmense (flat land) and it is near the rivers Taro and Stirone.
It derives its name from Fontana lata which means big fountain; with reference to the fountains, natural springs of plains that are observed even today in the Bassa Parmense. Such sources emerge on the surface carrying the clear waters that create particular climatic conditions and supply different channels including the moat that surrounds the Rocca Sanvitale of Fontanellato.
A massive reclamation happened shortly after the year 1000 by the cistercian monks of the nearby abbey of Fontevivo.
It was already inhabited during the Bronze Age and then the territory was colonized by the Romans.
The Rocca is by far the main attraction of Fontanellato. Located in the center of the main square, it's a huge fortress surrounded by a moat full of water, erected in the 14th century on the remains of a former 12th century building. After many restoration works throughout the years, it was transformed from a defensive fortress into the house of the Sanvitale Earls, who have lived there for about six centuries. The jewel of the castle is the "Room of Diana and Actaeon" frescoed by Francesco Mazzola, the Parmigianino.
Other places of interest are the Sanctuary of the Blessed Virgin of the Rosary, built in 1514, which draws all year numerous pilgrims.
Worth also a visit the Oratory of the Assunta with the wooden sacristy of 1720 work of Giulio Seletti and decorations by Sebastiano Galeotti; the former stables Sanvitale; Villa Gandini and the Botanical Park.
In 2004 Fontanellato received the title of slowcity, based upon indicators such as urban quality, infrastructures, hospitality, and typical local product promotion. The town has also received the title of City of Art and Culture and the Orange flag of the Touring Club Italiano.
Thing to see: the Historic center, Sanvitale Fortress, the Sanctuary of the Blessed Virgin of the Rosary, the Oratory of the Assunta, the former stables Sanvitale, Villa Gandini, the Botanical Park, the Church of Santa Croce.
