A Quest to Save the Orangutan

in #photography6 years ago

August 30, 2017. Borneo, Malaysia. Wiped off sweat, drank some water, and adjusted my camera settings. Branches breaking, gasps from people, and I look up. 20 feet away is the gigantic male Orangutan looking at me. Exactly like he is, in this position. We stared at each other for what seemed like forever, as I slowly backed away. But not before taking this photo...

Orangutans are 6 times stronger than a human, and have amazing speed. And that is one heck of a beard! Oh eeeh... Did you know that orangutans are among the most intelligent primates?! They use a wide variety of sophisticated tools to construct their nests and live in trees most of the time. They have been extensively studied for their behavior. Unfortunately, they are endangered animals so we all have a duty to protect them. Borneo lost more than 100,000 Orangutans from 1999 to 2015 :(

Six times stronger than a human? Did you know this BEFORE you stood there and took the photo? I would have ran away for sure. Great shot!

Haha no I actually looked it up afterwards. Damn I was afraid ;)

Hahaha! Had you known it before hand, you might have run away without this great shot!

astonishing! that's an encounter of a lifetime, I envy you!

We need to get like a fundraiser for that species !

Fantastic idea! We've got so many bot services here on Steemit, but almost none of them seem to be linked to a good cause. Would be great to have that.

Yes someone should make like an charity donation account.

And all steem power delegated to there would be going to good cause.

and also people can donate sbd and steem there

If I had some more SP, I would have a go at it... small fishes combined could perhaps start out as well though.

Hi, I liked your post, surely the man is the one who has led this species to the danger of extinction, we are monsters, it is our duty to protect them to make their population grow, a greeting from Venezuela ...

not just orangutan, many of other species in asia is also getting lesser and lesser too.. we should protect all other animals too

Yep, the sad truth.

Amazing experience and photo my friend, and thanks for highlighting their plight! I used to see them daily when I worked at Chester zoo. The Zoo has a campaign to educate people in UK about palm oil (as well as their conservation work on the ground in Sumatra and Borneo). Keep up the good work!

Beautiful! Maravillosa criatura, hace poco leí que esta especie esta amenazada :(

Together, we can protect our fauna species. Great photo!

Wow, amazing story. That would be a frightening but very exciting experience to have! It looks so pure with that stare.

What a great shot! I was in Borneo last month and I agree, it was hot. Great post, do you have more from your trip? Here's the best picture I got, this little cutie was really too far for my camera.
