A February flight into Longyearbyen -a small settlement on the Arctic archipelago of Svalbard. Swipe across to see the journey towards the airstrip. In the second picture, the lights on the hillside are from one of the coal mines near Longyearbyen. The last picture is over ‘downtown’ Longyearbyen. Being winter it was very dark and so these pictures were captured right on the limit of the camera I had with me at the time. (In terms of sensitivity to light). The ghostly blue Arctic light of late February and September is much sought after for photography. Last week residents of Longyearbyen celebrated the return of the light and were happy to see the sun clearly in the sky 🌞 Always welcome after the darkness of the long Arctic winter.
