A glimpse into the adventures of a Capetonian in her Mother City....

Saturday was spent at Erf 81....
Table Mountain, with her winter tablecloth. View from Erf 81 on 29.07.2017
Erf 81 is one of Cape Town's special places. Hidden away in Tamboerskloof, this old abandoned military base is now re-purposed into a foster farm and the base for permaculture food gardens, an organic market and a social club called The Melting Pot. An unassuming presence in one of Cape Town's most affluent suburbs, the community are under constant threat of eviction because the land they live on is commercially valuable. However, this heart-filled space has so far managed to stave off efforts to shut them down, and long may this freedom last. I've started spending some regular time there, so expect more photos from my adventures around the place. To read more about how a man called Andre Laubscher founded Erf 81, and what it has to do with a python, two goats and a llama, click here.
Andre and Baarbara at Erf 81, Cape Town, 29.07.2017
Baarbara is the first lamb I have ever bottle-fed : ) ...it was hard to believe I was in the centre of a city, sitting cross-legged on the ground with a 4-week old lamb on my lap.. I have become a regular visitor to Erf 81: I find it a very calming space. There is something hugely appealing about an unpretentious place in which you are welcome to Just Be Yourself, especially in Cape Town which can be very (very) pretentious. You're always welcome to visit and add value: so if you're in the area, feel free to stop by and expand into the space by gardening, jamming at the open mic nights at The Melting Pot, or being a farmhand (and hanging out with the foster animals).
On Sunday ATOM had a braai and we called it a meeting...
A backyard in Observatory, Cape Town on a hot Winter's evening. 30.07.2017
ATOM collective is a creative crew that host ambient and deep tech parties in Cape Town. We're a group of friends, really, who do what we love, together. And when we meet to discuss business, there is always a tasty meal involved. This time, we had a braai (barbecue) and inaugurated the garden table, taking advantage of the unseasonably hot weather we've been having.
Some context: Cape Town is in the middle of a drought. July is our midwinter: usually it's freezing and very wet. This Sunday we were out under the stars in T-shirts....
More on the effects of the drought, the adventures of ATOM, braaing culture and life at Erf 81 to follow : )
Much love from the Atlantic Seaboard at sunset in July, 2017.
