The Camarguaise race is a sport in which participants try to catch award-winning attributes fixed to the forehead and horns of an ox called cocardier or biòu (beef in Provençal), but which is sometimes conferred the dignity of a bull by calling it : bull cocardier. This sporting game, without killing, is practiced in the French departments of Gard, Herault, a large part of the Bouches-du-Rhone, as well as in some municipalities of Vaucluse. The sports competition is organized into three trophies with the Trophée des As, the Trophée des Raseteurs and the Trophée de l'Avenir.
The Camarguaise race differs from the Andalusian race in many ways: "from the bull that is put to death (Spain), we pass to the castrated bull, glorified in his lifetime, an ideal of domination of the officiant to an ideal of domination of the consecrated animal (Camargue). Such a remarkable contradiction does not, however, prevent a great number of Camargue race lovers from following the bullfights that are presented in their region without experiencing any particular discomfort at the time of the killing. "
The Camarguaise race is practiced in a region that extends well beyond the Camargue country, from the gates of Avignon to Montpellier, bringing together around the Rhone delta part of Languedoc, and Provence, according to a tradition that goes back to the Middle Ages.
