Yes, you are right, and I avoid buying things in this time, if I don't need to, because when I have time to search for cheaper prices during the year I am sure to find !DERANGED better deals most times.
The children get small presents or money, which they prefer anyway, but my Missus and I, we don't give ourselves. Adults don't get gifts from me and I do not want to get gifts at Christmas ;)

Yes, sending money is the best in my opinion, because then they can buy what they want, just as my kids ... or they can save it, just as my kids don't do ;)

Ha! just as they don't do! Yes, but I bet you encourage them to save. I like the rule of giving yourself 10% to save out of everything you earn. I just wish I would have done that myself!
