A Spider of Unusual Size

in #photography8 years ago

Spiders don't tend to get very big here where I live, so this one caught my attention when I saw it sitting in its web. I'm sure this is from the genus Araneus, but I'm not sure which species it is. Perhaps gemmoides?

In any case, I wish it luck as it tries to catch and devour flies and mosquitoes. I snapped this photo with my phone, and may try to get some better pictures with an old digital camera that might work better for macro-photography.

That's definitely a spiderius ugleus.

Great photo. I used to have a rather large spider who built her web in the window near my desk. Loved watching her while she stayed there. :)

horrible :P damn i dont like spiders :P

If they stay out of my bedroom and don't spin webs across forest paths I'm hiking, they're fine with me.

without interference they are fine too me too lol :D but they running inside pants sometimes :P eww thats awkward :P

Definitely looks like an orb weaver of some kind. I have a dozen or so around my property that I like to think of as my pets. My theory is that if I leave them to flourish they'll compete for territory with the black widows and keep the population down. I kill the widows when I see them too. Seems to be working. When I moved in two years ago we had about as many widows as we now have weavers, and now their prevalence has swapped. I only occasionally see a black or brown widow these days but I'm constantly walking into orb weaver webs in the evenings lol.

Whats going through the spiders head.

Probably this song:

Good work?
