My Epic Sunrise in Guatemala at the top of Indian Nose Hike

in #photography7 years ago

At 5 am in the morning I rolled out of my hostel bed. The girl I had met the night before was already up and dressed, ready for our hiking adventure. This is the beauty of traveling in hostels. We caught a tuk-tuk along the pot-hole-ridden road until the driver told us we had arrived. For the next hour we navigated a narrow track through the dense forest before finally emerging atop the mountain. This is the view that greeted us as the sun slowly tried its best to burst through the morning haze. Thank you random girl at the hostel for the adventure and thank you Guatemala!

In the mountains towering over the towns surrounding Lake Atitlan, is one of the most epic sunrise viewpoints in Guatemala. The beauty of this hike for those who aren’t in it for the long haul is that the trek up is less than 30 minutes. At the summit, you will have views over San Pedro, San Clara, San Pablo, Lake Atitlan and San Pedro Volcano as the sun rises.

I booked a tour with a local operator from San Marcos for 115 Quetzal (14 USD). If you do the hike during the day this is not necessary at all. Just take a tuk-tuk to the hike and it is pretty straightforward to the top. However, in the early hours of the morning, I didn’t want to take the chance of getting lost and missing the sunrise with my one and only chance to attempt the Indian Nose hike. Also, I don’t think it would be easy to get a tuk-tuk at four in the morning but props to you if you can.
