♢ TYPHOON - BARACOA, CUBA ♢

in #photography7 years ago (edited)

A typhoon had wrecked the village several months earlier and the only thing it had left behind were warm hearts and empty stomachs.

In my young lifetime it has become a reoccurring observation that the people stripped of all possession, turn out to be the ones to remind me of how beautiful a species we are capable of being. The people of Baracoa understood that, even though the surface of their existence had been ravaged, they still possessed all that mattered. It was a humbling thing for me to witness.

While bicycling for an hour to find a couple of eggs (there was little else left in the city to consume) my mind soaked in the thought that we let ourselves get distracted too easily by the superficialities that we are taught are, intrinsically, part of a modern life.

Society has forgotten to teach its children that it is in fact the love and empathy we experience for one another that will save us from starvation.
The people of Baracoa engraved the lesson into my hungry soul.
