Chitwan National Park is located in the Tarai, which is the lowland region in southern Nepal and northern India. It was established in 1973 and granted the status of a World Heritage Site in 1984. Over an area of 932km² you will find an incredible biodiversity with more than 700 different species, excluding the insects.
The Nationalpark is a tourist hotspot and you will have to pay quite a bit to gain entry. I did a lot of research which company I wanted to give my money to and who is acting in the most sustainable way. I chose Dynamic Eco Tours which was a great choice. They are against elephant rides and pro conservation. We chose a 6 hour hike through the forest instead of a Jeep Ride since this felt like the right way to explore such a place.
Entering the park without an experienced guide can be really dangerous, considering that there are wild elephants, rhinoceros, tigers and bears roaming around! We started the journey with a lot od respect and it was quite an adventure.
As an ecology student, I had a absolute blast in the area and could have easily spend a month over there, it was absolutely fascinating.

Crocodylus palustris - Busking mugger crocodile enjoying the sun
Tadorna ferruginea - Ruddy Shelduck, they are really common in the area. The park is a wonderland for ornothologists with more than 500 bird species
Bubalus arnee - Wild Water Buffalo with it´s little friend on the back
Anastomus oscitans - Asian openbill storch
Macaca mulatta - Two Rhesus macaques
Halcyon smyrnensis - White-throated Kingfisher, what a stunning little fella
Homo sapiens -A "human" it its natural habitat
Axis axis - Can you spot the spotted deer?
This is where things got really, really exciting. Is it what I think that it is?!
Rhinoceros unicornis - The indian rhinoceros! It was so close, I got really scared and even our guides were suprised. This was a incredible moment for me. Wow!
Cebus capucinus - White-headed capuchins jumping around in the trees, so much fun to observe
Sus scrofa cristatus - An indian wild boar checking out who is wandering through it´s forest
On the way back we encountered other tourists in a Jeep, which felt so wrong
The day ended with a magical sunset

I’m in Chitwan right now. Took a Jeep ride yesterday and I’m hiking today. A rhino has been coming to the river by the canoe ferry every night, crocodiles lie on the river bank there, and wild boars run around. It’s almost as much as I saw on the tour.
