Greetings!
It's been awhile since I've shared bison photos here on Steemit, and today was a good day to pay them another visit. They were close... Very close. One even started licking the salt off of my truck, until I pulled forward. I didn't want her to get sick off road salt!
These two were quite attached to each other. After a few minutes of following them with the lens, they finally provided an interesting photo!
I finally got a shot of one's misty breath. The temperatures are well below freezing, and bison have a lot of hot air in them. This one was trying to create a cumulus cloud. She may have succeeded. As you can see, it's snowing. Again.
Besides being kind of funny, this images is sharp! Click on it for the full-screen and, if you take zoom in, you can see the amazing detail in the texture of her tongue!
Well, it's not the whole herd, but it's a good portion of them. Minneopa State Park, near Mankato, Minnesota, has around 20 genetically pure bison. The park, in collaboration with the Minnesota State Zoo, monitor the herd and allow for visitors to enter their large enclosure. The "Minnesota Safari," as I like to call it, is about three miles of gravel road with a cattle guard at each end. This keeps bison in and cows out, preserving the genetic purity of these amazing creatures.

I too love the bison! On the Alaska highway, there was one that we used to call Mack because someone had a sleep in their Mack truck and the bison simply beat the crap out of the Mack truck. Lesson learned....keep on truckin' lol
Sounds like a really angry bison! I'm glad these ones didn't decide to kill my truck. It's suffered enough from humans that don't know how to do roundabouts!
@fotosdenada ... my favorite was the snowy chin. I am surprised they let you get so close. I have never had the opportunity to see bison up close, thank you, that had to be a phenomenal experience for you as a photographer. Thank you for sharing (^_^)
It's a little easier to get close to them with the road going through. Catching them in the right spot is a matter of chance, though! If they're by the road, you just watch the herd for awhile and see which direction they're moving. Then you can position yourself sort of in front of them and turn off the engine. They'll eventually pass you up without paying much attention. I wouldn't make any suddon moves or noises, though!
I could imagine ... stampede 😱 you are brave. I will resteem your post. So others can see your work.

Amazing shots!
Little sad thing - in the past the people killed millions of them and have now to protect small herds to
But small steps are better, like no steps!
Cheers from the summerside of the planet :)
Thanks! I wish it were summer here... I'm tired of this winter stuff, even if it is pretty!
The past has taught some hard lessons. The European settlers thought the bison would never end. They used to run entire herds off cliffs to use for meat for the explorers and miners. Hopefully these little herds will eventually lead to a larger-scale reintroduction, some day.
Would be nice <3
Since 6 years now i only see snow on pics and in vids :)
Stay strong - summer is coming soon.
Cheers from Paraguay, South-America
Steem on!
Great pics!! Wow, they are super clear and that does look SUPER cold! I would literally freeze to death. The snowy chin is pretty cool! My kids would love to play in the snow...for about 2 minutes! :)
Ha! They'd be fine, with a good bundling up! It's actually gotten pretty "warm" out. As in, it's only about ten degrees below freezing, as opposed to thirty!
Beautiful!
Thanks!
I never thought of Minnesota as being a place where bison roam. Thanks for sharing your beautiful photos of such gorgeous beings.
The west side of the state is mostly plains, so it's great natural habitat for them. In the old days, bison would roam even through the Duluth area.
That's so cool! I've only seen them from a super far off distance. Those are some awesome shots.
Thanks! The one licking my truck was a bit surprising. I was worried she'd get upset when I started the truck, but I didn't want her to get sick. She did jump lol

Thx for this amazing stuff
Thanks :-) Glad you enjoyed the shots!
Awesome shots.....love the close ups and the snow that you captured mid air.
Glad you moved your truck. :)
Thanks! Too bad I don't have a GoPro or something. The way she jumped when I started the engine was hilarious. Maybe it tickled her tongue!
