STRAWBERRY
Fragaria (English pronunciation: [frɪeəriə]) [2] is a genus of flowering plants in the rose family, Rosaceae, commonly known by the name of strawberries because of its fruit that can be consumed. There are more than 20 species and many hybrids and cultivars. The most commonly grown strawberries are garden strawberries (Fragaria × ananassa). Strawberries are a very important commercial fruit, bred in different parts of the world.
There are more than 20 species of Fragaria around the world. The key grouping of this strawberry species is based on the number of chromosomes. There are seven main types of chromosomes found throughout the species. Some species are diploid ie have two pairs of the seven chromosomes to make the number 14 chromosomes. The other is tetraploid which has four pairs of the seven chromosomes making the number 28 chromosomes, hexaploid (6 pairs), oktoploid (8 pairs) or dekaploid (10 pairs).
