The Gibson Block is an iconic building of downtown Edmonton and is the city's only flat iron building. The building was built in 1913, during the height of the commercial boom by William Gibson. The flat iron shape maximizes its use of space on the triangular shaped property, and the building borrows several aspects of Chicago style architecture.
The building provided retail space on the main floor, offices (which were later on converted into apartments) and Turkish Baths in the basement. After years of neglect in the 80s and early 90s, the building was later restored in 1994 by the Edmonton City Centre Church Corporation to house the Women’s Emergency Accommodation Centre.
