I was on a boat witnessing 30 ft waves crash right in front of my eyes.
Every winter off the west coast of Ireland if the conditions are right a huge swell comes in off the Atlantic Ocean, and it's crazy. The surfers swarm from Europe to contemplate giving it a try.
Not your typical coconut sipping tropical blue water surfing images. It's cold, dirty and the surfers dress up like seals. Head to toe in 5-7mm wetsuits to keep toasty and warm.
Here's the photos I captured while on the boat and the rib while being dumbfounded by the power of the ocean.
Would you?
Cold, windy and wet. That's Ireland
We sat perched in a boat on the channel safely away from the waves, but close enough to shiver with the salt spray splashing our faces.
No waterproof camera housing so this could attribute to why it is slowly dying. Totally worth the experience of coming face to face with a 30ft wave to feel it crash. Refreshing!
Hope you enjoyed these cold photos from the warmth of where ever you are.
Captured using a Canon 5d mk3 with 24-105mm f2.8L and 70-200mm f/2.8L.
Location: Mullaghmore, Co. Sligo, Ireland.

Great pics dude, i guess it was pretty fun!
Got to love waves... I love photographing water in motion... thanks for sharing. You have a new follower :)
Thanks @gavvet, water filmed in slow motion is probably the best thing in the world.
Those waves look so refreshing! You're making me want to pick up surfing :)
Go for it @keverw :) as long as you do it in a water place it's a lot easier.
Beautiful pictures. I live on the shore but have never seen such waves.
Yes, because of the low reef so close to surface the wave has nowhere to go but up pulling the water with it
The photos are impressive)) I feel the power and strength of the ocean, even breathe while watching))) I Love waves...)) thanks for the photo!
Cheers @yuliya :) it was terrifying and amazing
That's an amazing! I want to do it too, but it looks like a quite difficult to do
Lets start with normal surfing small surfing first :) that's where I am

Awesome photos!
Surfing on a cold day? Hell, yeah!
@daxon Brilliant photos! This is my home turf. Are you familiar with Rossnowlagh, Bundoran, and Strand Hill? All within an hour's drive of Mullaghmore harbor. (There's a much calmer photo shot of the main beach in my introduction post.) Slainté!
Thanks @davidbrogan! Yea I've been in the area for years, love it. I'm from Wicklow. Usually SUPing on Lough Gill when I get time. You're a lucky man with that in your back garden.
Those pics came out amazing man wow. Check out my trip to Jamaica. https://steemit.com/travel/@dmacshady/my-first-trip-to-jamaica-and-it-was-ultimate-greatness
