When I Was A Photographer - The Art Of The Nude

When I lived in this house, every morning I would go to the bathroom to prepare for the day and each and every day without fail I would marvel at the beautiful dappled light that streamed in the window.

There was something about it that was quite captivating, I would extend my arm and allow it to be bathed in the soft light as I twisted it this way and that, wondering at its fragility.

Every morning I would say to myself; I must do a shoot in here one day, this light is just too beautiful to waste.

Then one day my friend agreed to pose nude for me, I assured her that it would be artistic and even though she was very body conscious at the time, I persuaded her that not only was she beautiful, but that I would do her justice.

I loved her Rubenesque curves, and her milky-white skin, I felt the combination was perfect for the bathroom.

Even though this scene was tranquil, the shoot actually started with a bang, quite literally.

She saw that we had one of those cafetiere thingies that you put coffee and hot water into. It actually belonged to the guy whose house it was, I was simply a paying lodger.

I didn't really drink coffee at the time, so when Rebecca asked me if she could use the cafetiere I said she could, as long as she didn't expect me to do anything, as I didn't know how to use it.

She put it on and we went next door as I started to talk to her and make her feel comfortable about taking her clothes off in front of me, when suddenly;

BANG!

Mein Gott!

We jumped out of our skins, she left the cafetiere on for too long and the pressure had caused boiling hot water and coffee to explode from it and cover the entire kitchen.

** Great! **

We took about half an hour clearing up, but I was worried we'd lose the light, so I told her to forget it and we should go upstairs.

The back picture was taken in front of the window that let the beautiful light in, and the mirror picture was taken right next to it.

Now when I look at the contact sheet I see others that I prefer, however back then I guess I was trying to make a statement about the fragmented nature of our souls and the duality of man or somesuch nonsense.

Anyway I still love the results; I don't consider them titillating or pornographic, hence I haven't used the NSFW tag, however if you guys think I should, then so be it, I will add it.

By the way, my housemate said he was finding coffee granules up to 9 months later! I think it was worth it though :-)

Ok, so I'm a guy commenting on this picture set. I can understand your reservations from the perspective of photog and subject, and I appreciate the fact you have such reservations.

But I think it's also useful to note that some of the greatest painters in history have done nudes and they did not appeal to the base. They appealed to eroticism, to sensuality, to intimacy, and they did so with class, dignity and respect. Your photos seem to capture that spirit.

The female form is a wonder to behold and its appeal evolved over time to aid in continuing the family line, to overcome the size of our brains and their capacity to set aside instinctual desires. I think perhaps it is when we can set aside those instinctual desires, that we can best appreciate such images.

Hi,

I like the serious face on the model and looking away from the camera. More mysterious about what she feeling or thinking when she exposed one breast.

Superb write up

All the words chosen are a literature itself.

Specially
