This is amazingly common in Guatemala - in 3 weeks I saw numerous accidents along these lines, mostly caused by transports driving the major east-west route through the mountains.
We drove from Antigua to Livingston and back - after the first hour or two you come to terms with your own mortality. Much worse was the 4+ hours spent waiting for an accident where a transport truck had jackknifed in the road.
Yep, to be honest I think drivers of any sort of public transport and trucks are the craziest. The road between Antigua and Guatemala City was a race track, and the speed the old buses travel at is crazy!
