They scoffed at the idea, pointing out that VW's [...] automobiles were technically inferior and would represent, “a completely uneconomic enterprise.”

...said the British - who to this day are absolutely incapable of even building a proper sink - about the company who produced the most successful car on the planet. I think such a statement must be what they call 'British humor'.

Sie spotteten über die Idee und wiesen darauf hin, daß die [...] Automobile von VW technisch minderwertig seien und "ein völlig unwirtschaftliches Unterfangen" darstellten.

...sagten ausgerechnet die Briten - die bis zum heutigen Tag unfähig sind, auch nur ein vernünftiges Waschbecken zu bauen - über die Firma, die das meistverkaufte Auto der Welt hergestellt hat. Das ist vermutlich der berühmte 'britische Humor'.

To be fair, after the war emotions on all sides were probably on edge. They might explain part of their reaction.
