It got its moniker from an incident where a group of convicts escaped from a Carson City prison. A posse, from Benton, headed by Deputy Sheriff George Hightower, struck the convicts near the head of what is currently Convict Creek.
Posse member Robert Morrison, a Benton retailer, and Wells Fargo Agent were killed in the encounter, and Mount Morrison was named after him (that mountain on in the front). It has often been noted on lists of odd place names.

It get's cold up there. This is past 7k feet so definitely has snow. California snows! It's not all Baywatch and beaches. The Eastern Sierras and Tahoe area is known for skiing :)
