Can you guess who this sweet old man is? Why it's none other than the legendary, one and only Mr. Gene Hackman.
What did the two-time Academy Award winner do after retiring from the limelight? He became a novelist and coauthored three novels: Escape From Andersonville, Justice for None, and Wake of the Perdido Star.
To me, he'll always be Lex Luthor in the greatest superhero origin movie of all time, SUPERMAN circa 1978. And who can forget the iconic, man of steel himself, Christopher Reeve who left us too soon. He would have been only 65 this year.
Mr. Gene Hackman was photographed with BAFTA LA Artist in residence, Lincoln Townley for a portrait painting in May of this year. Looking very good for an 87 year old man, wouldn't you agree?
Thanks for stopping by and reading this quick little article. For some odd reason, Mr. Gene Hackman suddenly came to my mind and considering he has been away from Hollywood for quite some time now (the last film I remembered seeing him in was ENEMY OF THE STATE which was in 1998 - he was already near 70 years old), so naturally, I wondered if he was still with us... so glad to find him looking so youthful and in great shape! All the best to you sir!
Preserved Dragons
One of the actors I like and admire. All the best to you Sir!
He was also great in Crimson Tide. Amazing actually.
I love him in Night Moves and Bat 21.
I haven't seen those yet. I've heard of Night Moves and just watched the trailer. Going to watch it now 👍
I hope you like it.
I enjoyed it. Can't beat the 70's grit and political incorrectness. This movie could not be made now, sadly. Gene Hackman's character greeting his wife with a boob fondle and a nubile under age girl would get Hollywood burnt to the ground in a flash... great acting, script and cast. Thanks again for mentioning this film.
I agree and you're welcome.
You're right about 1978's Superman. It is the greatest superhero movie of all time and all others should bow down to it.
Thanks for the update on a great actor. I knew he had retired but I did not know he had become an author. Glad to see he's doing well.
My pleasure. It was one of those nights when out of the blue his name popped into my subconscious... The reason I think is all the tough guys I'm drawing recently, Mr. Hackman wasn't going to be left :)
One of the best actors to grace the screen. My favorite movie of his would be The Conversation. Directed by Francis Ford Coppola, with a young Harrison Ford, amongst others... A prescient film.
