I don't know if corruption can bring out the saint but perhaps some that attain power need not let it corrupt their purpose.
For example, (literally a saint) Saint Mother Theresa held a lot of power yet continued to do what she did until she died, Ghandi held even more sway. Perhaps it is because they didn't aim for power, they aimed to do their best and power was granted. Instead of corruption, it supercharged their efforts, emphasised their strengths like a happy drinker who becomes happier.

Ghandi is quite a good example. Mother Theresa, I don't know. I recently came upon some nasty articles about her, so I don't know what to think anymore.

Yes, behind closed doors, who knows. But I also do not necessarily believe all the stories these days either. I think she would have to be a very hard woman to do what she did year on year, I am sure not everyone held her in their good graces.
