Couldn't agree more. The Hitchhikers' Guide to the Galaxy has this to say on the topic of human self importance and evolution:

"Earthmen are not proud of their ancestors, and never invite them round to dinner."

Terry Pratchett also made some light-hearted but truthful observations about the mind's ability to obstruct and ignore any evidence inconveniently in conflict with what it believed to be reality.
