The Fear of Reality

in #philosophy7 years ago (edited)

If I had one word to characterize the human condition I would choose "fear". Much like every other living organism on this planet we have been tamed by the limitations of our environment. Restrictions that define do's and don't's. And so we have invented illusions to get around this conundrum.

Elaborate creations myths became a necessity to explain our origins. Even after the dawn of science many of us refuse to admit that they are the outcome of a primordial chemical soup that is no different than the filth we step into after a rainy day. The invention of souls assured us that our existence is valued and deserves something better than to rot with the worms in the ground.

On a more superficial level, we masquerade ourselves with make-up so we can make an impression — perhaps to meet the person of our dreams. Later on we get disappointed if they end up falling in love with the idea of beauty and appearance instead of "who we really are". Our vocabularies are filled with words that remove the harshness of reality and rather romanticize our existence. This is how fucking becomes "love" in our heads. A default natural act that releases specific chemicals has fooled us enough to deny the process and rather attribute it to something higher — in hope of course that will also elevate our significance and place in the cosmos.

Throughout history we have made sure to distinguish ourselves from other animals. We are afraid of the idea of dying and be gone forever. We can envision our own demise and that scares the shit out of us. Yet, no matter how many messiahs we invent, no matter how many rituals and holy books we write, we still shit from the same hole as all of the beings.

The only antidote against reality is mutual brainwashing. If enough of us believe that there is something different other than the fucked up reality then the human brain can fool itself believing it is true. This is how people end up feeling so good when they are in church. This is why people feel safe and comfortable at home. This is how and why virtual reality, games and being glued in front of a screen for hours works. Our brains have been trained to defy reality at all costs.

We have been training our illusions in order to accommodate the harshness of reality since the dawn of human history. Slaves of the past told their own stories of hope and salvation. Terminally ill people assured themselves that it was a test and that something better is awaiting. Our brains are amazing storytelling machines and this is why our technologies are all focused towards that spectrum. Our future will become more and more made-up. Our brains will become devices that entertain themselves.

Contrary to common belief, the brain can indeed entertain itself

The story of the human being has always being a tragic one. We have been caught by surprise in evolution's elaborate scheme. Our brain cannot handle itself and thus it is lost in its stories. On a daily basis we are driven by hope and false promises. What would become if the 5-8 wage slave would realize that this is going to be their entire life? What would happen if a family man realizes that his offspring is no different than his neighbour's? What if a religious person realizes that he has been taught about a specific version of a supreme being because they were born in a particular culture and not another?

Our species would have never made it this far. The fear of reality if what allowed us to create functional societies. Fear of reality helped us construct ethical codes so we wouldn't boutcher each other senselessly but only if we had good excuse. Fear of reality allowed us to see our own tribe from a better perspective so that we could survive the threat from others. Without fearing reality there would be no meaning for our existence — for meaning prerequisites fear.

“There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.”

1 John 4:18

In other words fear is the motive of the human evolution ?

According to Napoleon Bonaparte , Men are moved by two levers only: fear and self interest. Fear is a universal malady, but sometimes it brings sanity and sanctity in the neighbourhood. One of the reason Indians are corrupt could be attributed to a lack of fear factor.

Humans are characterized by fear. Fear drives us, even when we don't know it's fear. Fear of being ordinary drives a normal man to shoot for greatness. Fear of being alone created marriages. And as you mentioned, fear of being reduced to the level of fellow animals led us to create religion and every excuse for its obvious lapses.

Fear is necessary for progress

I think descriptions of our "mutual brainwashing" aren't so interesting as a different question you didn't ask. How come 'running away from reality' has made us a dominant species on this planet?

Maybe there is up-to-date storytelling and outdated storytelling? Maybe your fear-based description of 'human condition' is actually a description of some transitional state of our culture A.D. 2017 and we just need some new and up-to-date stories for the Information Age?

And then the fear will disappear...

Our vocabularies are filled with words that remove the harshness of reality and rather romanticize our existence

It's very true, Like creating intangible objects using only ideas.

yeap. even the word "nothing" is bullshit. there is always "something"

Great post! I like it :)
"Fear of reality", that's the first time I see it in that sense. I think that we need to let go of the feeling that everything has meaning or should have and just live life to the fullest.

That's funny! my new post also about reality. please check it, I think you will like it based on this post ^^
Followed!
@paps

haha! i have just wrote a similar message! i too am hunting for more readers and my last post is on reality! would love for you to check it out.. i have followed you and will read your last post!

Thank you very much :D
We are pretty similar in that sense haha

Really a great post! i agree with everything you wrote and as virtual reality goes .....i hate it! My friend bought one i wanted 2 slap him across the face! If right now if your reality sucks, at least it's real. Good times or bad times face reality my friends! One Love

Great Post and always be happy

We are not animals. Sometimes it turns out we are.

but we are animals

I love your blog. Thank you for all of your challenges. Keep it up.

I agree with this post and I look forward to reading more from you in the future.

When i come home after a bad day at the hospital i take my dog out for a long walk to distance myself from the reality. It makes me happier and to be happy is what life is about for me.:) Good article!

yeap. some have dogs, some a playstation, some both.

People cannot face reality because that would drive most of them crazy. And the most unfortunate amongst us are those willing to accept a miserable fate on Earth hoping to get a better one in the afterlife.

Saludos

Very good post...thank you for putting that together.

I agree, man is driven by fear and he engages upon that in every way he can. To start, he doesnt want to engage in reality hence the need to distract oneself. Then, one doesnt like the projections of the mind since they are fear based so another distraction is needed.

Many looked down upon a city from a plane and noticed how it resembled ants scurrying around in a colony yet few seem to link the idea that we are just like them. We are going in circles doing what we deem "important" without asking for what purpose?

I think he was Shakespeare who basically said we start dying the day we are born. Grim thought to most people but isnt that our "reality"? Philosophy and religion tries to answer the question what does it mean but, as of yet, all explanations are futile. We live, we die....is there anything else?

Gravitation is not responsible for people falling in love.

- Albert Einstein

Well can we prove that?

Fear is something we must face to face.
Inspiring article. Entertaining myself.

Big words man, really big words. And totally right ofc, happy to sepnd 2 minutes fo my life taking a look at your post.

Have a great day mate.

Your post very nice..i like it..don't be afraid..believe in Allah taala then your fear will disappear ..i love you guys

As a virtual reality developer I experienced health decline and frequent headaches to maintain my work deadline. The blue light and disjoint from standard reality causes strange effects on the psyche, the technology currently available pales in comparison to a much stronger and healthier form of exploring alternate realities known as astral body meditation.

All I know is that I don' t know nothing (Operation Ivy). It is for this reason that I normally aspire to the religion of the greek gods. Mainly because they are assholes and it would really freak HR out when compiling the diversity results.

@kyriacos Love your articles man :3 I'm writing a similarly based blog.

You gotta know that everything is self made based on the way we perceive things. Fear is there to teach us about our own flaws so we can go beyond it !

Much love and all the best friend <3

I like your post but i don't agree with you, i believe that everybody exists within their own reality and how they see the reality is completely up to them.. i would really appreciate it if you read my last post as it fits perfectly with this article! thanks for sharing have followed!

Couldn't agree more. The Hitchhikers' Guide to the Galaxy has this to say on the topic of human self importance and evolution:

"Earthmen are not proud of their ancestors, and never invite them round to dinner."

Terry Pratchett also made some light-hearted but truthful observations about the mind's ability to obstruct and ignore any evidence inconveniently in conflict with what it believed to be reality.

So what is the basic fear we have? Is it the fear of death?

Fear ! We must face it but not physically so we can make it easy !!
The first photo is really funny !!" Monkey see Monkey do" !

What would become if the 5-8 wage slave would realize that this is going to be their entire life? What would happen if a family man realizes that his offspring is no different than his neighbour's? What if a religious person realizes that he has been taught about a specific version of a supreme being because they were born in a particular culture and not another?

Most of the time, nothing spectacular. All of those things happen all the time.

We are so bad at judging reality and risk, that most of us remain hopeful even when we are faced with those realizations and keep finding silver linkings and keep imagining things getting better somehow.

Our risk assessment is so bad that lotteries and casinos keep making billions.

The thought that kept running through my head while I was reading this, is whether sometimes believing something untrue, will eventually make it true. And I don't mean it in the "might makes right" or "history is written by the victors" sense, but rather literally that (in this case a fear) might make something a reality. So, for instance, the fear of death, might make immortality (or something close to it) a reality. In that sense, believing in a falsehood is useful. For example, if we all lived like the feet-on-the-ground ancient Cynics, we would all still be living like the ancient Cynics. Not very useful! I guess what I'm trying to say might relate a lot to William James' argument(s) in his Will to Believe.

I am the Great Cornholio! Would you like to see my portfolio? I have a portfolio in my bunghole, with my óleo!

Pshh. The only things I fear are the flesh-eating husks of former humans walking around outside my house here in the year 2066.

@kyriacos Excellent Tale. Awesome you ended up in the position to hustle your way out of your respective condition.

You are very skilled at arguing your opinion, but I believe that you have it all wrong. Have you examined your own fear? I think your worst fear is that there really IS a God, and a Heaven, and an absolute right and wrong, and that it is our journey here on Earth that tests us. We have been given free will, because God wants us to come to Him voluntarily, not as robots. Many people ask, 'If God is loving, why is there evil in the world, and therefore fear?' I do actually believe in science and evolution as well. I see no contradiction between the two ideas. God's power is limitless, and He is eternal. Why then limit his creation to something that happened only in a time frame humans can comprehend? So it took God over 3 billion years to create us. So what? He guided evolution cell by cell, moment by moment, individual action by action, leading to us. All living beings, including animals, contain an Energy that cannot be destroyed, but returns to its Creator. He has promised this, since He first made Himself known to the Jewish people over 3,000 years ago. Predation, competition for resources, destruction and decay - leading to the various evils of human society - have been necessary for the continuation of life on this planet. I am not a proficient enough student of the Bible to be able to explain why God allows evil (and fear) to exist on Earth. But I know this: God loves us, and loves all life on this Earth. And someday all these evils will be purged and become unnecessary. 'The lion will lie down with the lamb...' and 'All creation awaits the return of the Messiah'. Why would 'all creation await' if it did not have a part in the new Heaven and Earth? Try opening your mind to these truths. I can't imagine how you can live each day with such a hopeless, grim view of life. If you can't believe that the Bible is the primary source of truth, what about all those people who have had 'after death' experiences? Try reading a book called "Proof of Heaven" by Eben Alexander. He is a brain surgeon who nearly died, saw Heaven and came back to tell about it. Prior to the experience, he had no religious beliefs. Afterwards... well, you'll just have to read the book. Having a very scientific understanding of the mind, the man's viewpoint is all the more convincing.
