RE: Does power corrupt?

in #philosophy7 years ago

In my experience, once the alcohol starts to build in the system and tear down inhibitions, the filters are removed, the ability to control taken away and words and behaviours slip out before they can be caught at the gates. I think that more of the real person can be seen.

Very interesting view! So basically you are saying when people are given power it doesn't change them, but it only reveals their true nature, as is the same when power is given.

I agree with you for most of the part, but my experience is different. It is indeed bizarre how people's behavior change when drunk, but I see alcohol as a drug (which it technically is). Like most drugs it numbs or shuts down certain senses.

This has two important effects:

First it removes barriers for the behaviors people were uncertain or afraid of. For example people start to dance or saying stuff that they had withhold. This is the "real person" part to me. The second effect are the social clues you miss because you are under influence. Alcohol makes you blind for certain things you would normally see. For example drunk people are less attentive to the emotions of others. Unwillingly, they make their friends very angry or even sad with their behavior. This has happened to me when I was lightly drunk. I hurt one of my closest friend and I didn't know about it. When she told me I couldn't remember how she reacted to me, while I normally understand broadly how she feels.

I think when people are given power they have a moment when they are "drunk" on power. Which makes them temporary blind. When the power has sinked they start to behave "normal" again.

as people looking to build community early on start to behave more like dictator the more support they get

Lol I hope this doesn't happen to me :P. Or it already happened... if it had you have the right to give me a good kick ;)

Good article man.
