Ive always considered nothing to be complete uniformity of a system in a state of perfect thermoequilibrium. No differences between any part of the system, thus indistinguishable from itself. It would require interaction from outside the system, in the case of the big bang, a fluctuation from a higher/lower state of entrophy.
