Atiatihan Festival in my hometown Kalibo, Aklan, Philippines is one of the most vibrant and colorful festival in the world. It is a tribute to our patron Saint Sto. Nino de Kalibo. Celebrated every third Sunday of January.
In this festival, you may join every band on the street dancing. Even if you don't know them. Everyone is welcome to join. I had so much fun and joy joining different bands wearing colorful costumes. Some of them filled their faces with coal to make themselves "Ati" or our native black people.
The beat of the drums and lyres will make you dance. And drunk at the same time because everyone keeps on giving you free drinks. Some of them wear costumes and mascots to be more creative and funny. Some of them wear color paintings and be a snake man.
It is just really sad that since this pandemic has happened. Our Ati atihan celebration is cancelled and just celebrate it online. Here are some photos for the entry of those who joins the costume making contest.
How I wish this pandemic will end so that next year I will be joining again this wonderful festival. For now. I will just post my throwback photos for pre pandemic celebration.
Looking forward for all of you to visit my beloved hometown soon when this pandemic is over.
Xoxo,
Meg
