Annually, our town celebrates Sanggutan Festival every 19th day on the month of May. The festival showcases the traditional way of gathering tuba (coconut wine) which is one of the industry in Barugo, Leyte.
Like any other town fiesta, decorating the streets is one of the activities. This year’s theme is “Barugo, padayon pagsirang.” This means, “Barugo, continue to shine.” Furthermore, the decorations must revolve around the theme and the materials to be used are the ones found in our town.
Instead of creating the very common banderitas (buntings), we, the teachers, in cooperation with expert carpenters, created a festival arc and lots of junior fence along Ponferrada Street and Delgado Street.
Meet sir Roque Elton D. Adizas, the artist. He is the brain of the whole decoration thing. He conceptualized every detail of the street décor we’ve made. He even contacted the carpenters who helped us put up the materials needed.
Me, the apprentice...
Hehehe!
Take a look at the biggest gallon.
A gallon is a container where tuba (coconut wine) is being stocked. Well, obviously it doesn’t look like a gallon, but soon it will be.
Thanks to sir Cyril and mano Gary.
The junior fences…
They are made up of wood and bamboo. To add a festive touch, three pamaypay (Anahaw fans) are used to form a flower. Actually, these aren't yet finished. A bagul (coconut shell) is supposed to be placed at the center of the flower.
Here’s the festival arc we’ve made.
It is made up of banig, bamboo, and plywood.
Thanks to sir Wilfredo and the carpentry gang!
There you have it! Our finished street decorations.
With this simple activity, the spirit of Bayanihan is being developed.
What is Bayanihan?
It is the spirit of communal unity wherein people work together to achieve a goal.
I hope you gained some insights on creating street decors. You may try doing some during your Festival Week. Good luck!
