What does your taste in music say about your personality

in #personality7 years ago

Although what you wear doesn’t define you as a human being, and neither does your taste in music, it seems that your playlist might say a few things about your personality. According to a study made by a group of psychologists from the Cambridge University, it appears that your musical preferences have a say in the way you think and feel.

The study showed that there are two categories of people: the rational ones, who prefer to go by the rules, and those who are guided by their emotions. So, let’s find out in what category you fit in.

The psychologists gathered 4000 participants who were put to a series of detailed questions about their thinking ways. After that, their musical taste was analysed – they had to listen to 50 songs of different music genres and say which ones they liked the most.

The participants to the study were between 20 and 60 years old. You would think that age has a say in music preferences, but the study demonstrated the contrary. It didn’t matter if the person was 20 or 60, his choices were only influenced by his personality type.

The people who were more sensitive had the tendency to choose more romantic, sensual songs, with a powerful message, like soft rock and R&B songs, while those who were rational thinkers chose more intense and calculated songs, like heavy rock and jazz songs.

The study suggested that the sensitive participants preferred songs that had a deep message, whether it was a positive or a negative one. On the other side, the other category of people preferred songs which were much more alert and complex, in which there were used a lot more instruments.

Of course, it is highly possible that a person can be a combination of the two categories mentioned above, having a mixed taste in music.

Also, here is a list of musical genres and what they say about your personality type:

Rap/Hip Hop

Those who listen to rap and hip hop music have a high self esteem and are very sociable.

Heavy Metal

The listeners of this musical genre have a tendency to be more introverted and to have a lower self esteem.

Indie Rock

The people who listen to Indie Rock music are not very active, but they have a very creative way of thinking and seeing things.

Electronic/Dance music

Those who are electronic music lovers are very creative and sociable people, who love to go out in the world and have a blast.

Classical music

Those who listen to classical music are introverted people, but they have a high self esteem and they also tend to get jobs that pay really well.

Pop music

People who like pop music are not really creative, but they are sociable and hard working.

Anyway, although you might fit in one of these categories, you should keep in mind that every person is unique and you should not be afraid to listen to whatever you like.

Nice to meet ya ;D

Is that you? <3

I can't see if you're sarcastic or not :))

if there is EVER any doubt..then assume YES!

I wouldn't really know where I fit in, Ican do hip/hop sometimes, I used to like rap for a while till I moved to gospel, but nothing changes the fact I like music with message! Like you said, maybe that's where I fall in

The people who listen to Indie Rock music are not very active, but they have a very creative way of thinking and seeing things.

Interesting, agree on some point. I am a rather active, or better say - forced to be. Creative, definitely.

People who like pop music are not really creative, but they are sociable and hard working.

this one i agree, the rest naaah.

I just discover your music by my friends really I like it thank you for sharing this wonderful post I'm following you now my dear @jwolf

Music doesn't make a person .

People that listen to EDM aren't all ravers .

People that listen to classical aren't all elderly.

People that listen to emo don't all want to die .

People that listen to rap aren't all gangsters.

People that listen to pop aren't all mindless media driven robots .

The person chooses the music ,the music doesn't make the person .

Happy To Help !

I'm listen a Rap so i have a high self esteem and are very sociable :D

I and some people, have been attacked by unknown people . Can you help me with just one upvote my friend ?

Yes I like music from small, but unfortunately sound is not beautiful, so I decided to stop in the music world.

I liked your post very well. Some of the lessons learned from this post.
Here's what you like most about Personality. Thanks so much for giving a good post.
@Resteem

I listen almost to all type of music, I should be a martian lol
Great article :)

Excelente.

You forgot one category...
Those who like good music no matter the genre :P

This is an interesting read. Actually humans can be divided into two main categories in any walk of life: a. Those who go with the flow of their emotions b. Those who think. In simple words people use either Head or Heart when it comes to making decisions.

Well, according to the classification I'm a sensitive passive not really creative introvert with high self-esteem. Looks like truth))

I love classical music, and the attributes there just describe me well!

I am a living contradiction than :D I listen to Hip Hop and Metal music lol

What does it mean that I don't listen to music? I honestly don't know what's good. I used to listen to 60's/70's/90's but nothing in 18 years. I'm introverted but I wonder if something like electronic music would help me be more social. It's hard with aspergers to get into most things, but I'll have obsessions.

Oh, I really enjoyed this post @jwolf :-) Music is such a great thing - no matter which music - and I just left a comment with @andyjaypowel 's techno music post the other day, telling him how much I enjoyed his way of music even if I am more of the classical type and somewhat hanging there in the 70ies tunes...

Could I say the classical music gets you into wellpaying jobs - well, in todays crypto world, this might be on a changing loop.... :-)
But maybe my love for classical music gave me the key to open the door to cryptos as well - it is all mathematics :-)

Cheers to you and a wonderfull night from the Seven Mountains in Germany

Interesting read. Thanks for sharing.
Not quite sure where I fit in though as I listen to all types. Except for heavy metal.

Good communication, friend @jwolf ! If this music captures me, it turns my soul! Tell me who i am :)))

love the edm moves :)
