4 Ways in which sadness is beautiful

in #personal8 years ago

According to society complaining and crying are signs of weakness, and self-pity is pathetic. Society sometimes makes us feel as though we are no longer allowed to feel sad, as if we should be ashamed of it. The overall message that seems to be sent out today, is that there must be something wrong with you if you're not happy. Time for an ode to pain!

1
The magic of melancholy

The first way in which sadness is beautiful, is that every instance of sadness has a work of art hidden inside. The challenge is to learn to see this beauty. It's easy to spot in melancholic works of art, such as Vincent van Gogh's "Wheatfield With Crows", Led Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven", J.D. Salinger's "The Catcher in the Rye" or Frank Darabont's "The Shawshank Redemption"... the list is endless. However, this vision not only applies to "official works of art", but also to your own struggles in life. These possess the same kind of melancholic beauty. Why don't you try and look at your sadness through the eyes of an artist? You might even start to feel inspired to sing, write or make something else creative about it! :)

2
The beauty in vulnerability

Have you ever noticed how beautiful people are when they're crying? I'm not talking about models with a fake tear on their photoshopped skin, but about real people with faces tightened with pain, red eyes, running makeup and snotty noses. I think they're beautiful, because their vulnerability makes them real humans.

3
Sadness makes you realize what you want

What's even more important, is that negative emotions make you realize what matters to you. When arguing hurts, it shows how much you actually appreciate the person you're arguing with. Every instance of sorrow indicates that you're missing something that's valuable to you. In the above example, you might be missing friendship or love. Your sadness makes you aware of what you find important in life. Let your pain be your guide to decision-making, so you can take charge of your own life.

4
Sadness makes you appreciate happiness

There would be no happiness without pain. Positivity can only exist in combination with a negative counterpart. Without sadness, we would be emotionally flattened. The experience of being an sentient human being would lose its depth. And that would truly be a waste.
