I check on my kids every night.
Every night before going to bed I go into my older son’s bedroom and cover him up with his duvet; I give him a kiss; And I listen. I go out and go to my younger son’s cot and I listen. Sometimes I listen for only few seconds and sometimes a bit longer.
Why?- you ask.
Because sometimes they are breathing so quietly that I have to hold my breath to hear theirs.
And there are times when my heart skips a beat and my head swirls inside - times when my ears fail me; And then I have to go closer; Until I can hear the most important sound in my life; Sound of their breathing.
So when I go to my boys’ bed to give them a kiss I don’t go there to be sweet; I don’t go there to make sure they are comfortable; I don’t go there to prove I am a good parent.; I don’t go there because I am sorry for shouting at them!
Because when you are a parent the only sound that matters is the sound of your child’s breathing.
