Fossils anyone?

in #paleontology8 years ago (edited)

South Africa has a very unique assemblage of fossils.

No iconic T-rex or Triceratops types but just as important.

Our more fossiliferous beds are found in a very arid area in the southern interior called the Karroo.
The fossils here predate T-rex and contain a very important branch of the Mammal like reptiles. It is from these that mammals would later emerge.
Here are some pics from an exhibit I attended recently.

Looks a lot like a dog doesn’t it?

Early T-rex type ancestor

Same scull from the side… a little squashed during the rock consolidation process

This guy was likely good at head-butting

Starting to show more uniform mammal like teeth

Fossilized eggs with embryo’s

This guy is just weird

Sure this guy has a head-ache now

Another weirdo to end off with

Jurassicly awesome!

Quite a but earlier than that though!

I love dinosavrus and other cool things what associated with dinosaurs. Maybe it will a cicle of posts? Thank for work.

Every time I see a bird, I think of dinosaurs, the bones look so similar. I'd love to find one of these one day, or any ancient artifact really. Africa has insane ancient sites and who knows how many relics like this

Remember, dinosaurs never went extinct. At least not avian dinosaurs. They have evolved into birds. In fact there are some of today's birds like emus which are remarkably similar.

It's only non-avian dinosaurs that went extinct. By the way, we now know that many non-avian dinosaurs had feathers too. So all that about T-Rex being a reptilian monster with dry skin? False. May have had feathers!

The stuff coming out of China's limestone deposits these days is completely amazing in this regard.

Exactly! Gobi Desert is now the top hunting ground for paleontology. Both the China and Mongolia. My favorite discovery has been Zhenyuanlong - velociraptors with wings! Yikes!

have ever heard that nigeria in africa has one of the highest number of natural resourses in the world. check it out (facts).

That makes t-trex sound cuddly and cute. damn, now I want a baby t-Rex

You should come visit me then.

EDIT added to OP

That's what I'm talking about, worked stones just lying about... I'd be in need heaven

I am FASCINATED by geology and particularly paleontology. Some of the creatures from the before the Triassic era are just plain weird.

Post something for us lets start growing the scientific content

I did post a couple of articles with the science tag, but they entered the void very quickly! I suppose at this time few steemers are interested in science. I was thinking about writing an article about this research paper which shows where life first formed. With your encouragement, I think I'll get down to writing it now. :)

And yes, would love to see more about paleontology.

Hit me up in chat and I will see about promoting your stuff when I start a new round of featured authors.

Excellent presentation. This is the first time I've had the chance to see fossils of therapsids. Some of the structures are so like our mammal fossils it's easy to see the relationship. These remind me of when I lived near Washington DC and could visit the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History frequently.

AH it's nice to see a topic different from the usual maijuana/travelphoto/whale. Thanks! Spam us with fossils!

I plan too... tomorrow its spelunking and troglodytes...

Wow! Have you yet had the change to check out Michael Tellinger's collection yet??? Or, have you been in touch with his work??? Thanks for your sharing. Namaste :)

The dinosaur will feel the distant past of romance.

nice post!
Worth sharing this information.
thank you @gavvet

If not just ignore a comment this is just a suggestion.

Thank you for sharing some of the history with me. I appreciate it.

Earlier I use to think Africa for all that gold rush and diamonds but now I have something else to think it for.

Hey man great stuff ! I was wondering if u did hear about this professor who got kicked from his university because he found dinosaurbones with rests of meat on it.
That basically would mean, that the bones wouldnd be older then few thousand years, which would pretty much destroy all we believe in regarding our past.

I'm not who's actually going to be right there tho, but maybe you heard about it and know something further ?!

Think was some univeristy in US

Worth sharing this information. Good Work

did not know south africa has that great heritage of fosssils . thank for info

the skull showing the teeth really portrait a mean animal.

It is nice to see a comments section on an article about fossils with zero creationists in it for once.

Interesting post as usual, thanks @gavvet

Great!! Thank you for inspired me to make a this post, fossil in villa de leyva: https://steemit.com/steemitcolombia/@moviedo1992/fossils-in-villa-de-leyva-colombia
