Nature tried going really big. In past eras, there were dinosaurs and huge plants. Climate change, asteroid impact, ice ages: whatever the causes, it became more difficult to find food at some points, which caused extinction of many larger ones. Perhaps it was easier for some smaller species to get what they needed. It's more efficient to be smaller.
