EXT. RIVER BANK - LATER
Boston and Charlie sitting on the bank, fishing,
contemplative, near end of day.
BOSTON
I wonder if my Dad liked fishing?
Boston turns melancholy.
BOSTON (CONT'D)
Mom never told me a thing about
him... not even why he left us.
As if he's talking to himself.
BOSTON (CONT'D)
(Softly)
I guess I was broken merchandise.
Charlie looks away. Boston shakes off the melancholy. He
turns to Charlie.
They continue to cast. As Boston watches his lure skip across
the water...
BOSTON (CONT'D)
My Mom loved him big time.
(Beat)
As I got older she got sick. She
confused me with him.
(Beat)
I let her wear me down.
(Beat)
I loved her though.
(Beat)
Hated him. Still do.
Boston turns to Charlie, profoundly hurt, looking for
answers. Charlie is torn apart but is staying composed, tries
to respond...
CHARLIE
I...
BOSTON
It's so fucked up. Hard to let anyone
love you when it's difficult to love
yourself, yeah?
Charlie is at a loss. He tries.
CHARLIE
Things happen. But wounds heal.
Charlie can't bear to hear more, so heart breaking he's
speechless.
BOSTON (CONT'D)
Well, too bad for him! He's missing
out on a great day.
Charlie needs a change.
CHARLIE (CONT'D)
Hey, let's go grab a bite.
Boston nods yes. They begin to pack up.
EXT. STREET HOT DOG STAND - LATER
Charlie and Boston holding hot dogs. A street vendor cart is
nearby. Charlie's sitting at picnic table. Boston stands
beside. Food's not that appetizing. Charlie, with half a
mouth full. Boston staring at his dog, suspiciously.
CHARLIE
Eat! It's better than no fish on a
bun!
They laugh, settle, then Charlie, tongue-in-cheek.
CHARLIE (CONT'D)
We need to get back. I think I have
some music to listen to.
Boston is elated. He takes a big bite. Charlie a bigger bite.
Both laugh, food falling out of their mouths.
INT. MONTAGE - NIGHT
MUSIC OVER:
SCENE ONE: Boston running a tune for Charlie in Stokers' Back
Room. Charlie sitting at table. Morphs to: Charlie on chair,
nearby. Boston sitting on stage edge. Charlie takes guitar,
demonstrates.
SCENE TWO: Boston performing in a show to a Stokers'
audience. Charlie and Curtis sitting together watching.
Curtis watching Charlie more than Boston. Charlie's eyes
alight watching Boston.
SCENE THREE: Boston running a tune in Charlie's flat. Charlie
offers advice, sings for him. Boston nodding his head in
agreement. Morphs to: the two sitting on chairs opposite,
singing together.
INT. STOKERS' FRONT ROOM - DAY
Charlie's sitting at a table. He doesn't see Curtis enter.
Curtis approaches. Charlie sees him last minute as he takes
bite of his burger, caught off guard.
CHARLIE
Oh! Hi.
Charlie makes some room.
CHARLIE (CONT'D)
Here. Grab a seat.
Curtis sits. He's upset.
CHARLIE (CONT'D)
Where you been?
CURTIS
Around.
CHARLIE
You're looking good. What's up?
Curtis works his way to it.
CURTIS
You know, after that night... I
thought I'd never see you again.
Charlie puts down his burger.
CHARLIE
(Smiling)
Yet here we are.
(Concerned)
You good with it?
CURTIS
I'm not sure.
Charlie makes it easier.
CHARLIE
Something on your mind?
Curtis is hesitant, slowly shakes head yes, blurts it out.
CURTIS (CONT'D)
So... why Boston?
Charlie sees what's coming, his anxiety rises.
CHARLIE
Why Boston what?
CURTIS
(Pleading)
Don't fuck with me Charlie. You know
what!
Charlie shakes his head, tries to cool Curtis.
CHARLIE
I think I know what you're asking,
but...
Curtis cuts him off, raised voice.
CURTIS
Why? His good looks? His ass?
(Emotionally charged)
Why not me?!
CHARLIE
(Unnerved)
Please! Keep your voice down.
(Beat)
It's not what you think, believe me
Curtis!
CURTIS
Why should I believe you?
CHARLIE
Because I'm asking you to.
(Calming)
Look, Curtis, I care about you. But
this isn't about you. It's about me
and Boston.
(Beat)
Please! Trust me? It's not what you
think.
Curtis is conflicted, thinking.
CURTIS
You're asking a lot Charlie.
Charlie listens.
CURTIS
You're a nice guy, but I've known
Boston a long time. I can't see him
get hurt.
CHARLIE
(Sincerely)
I hear you. It's OK. He won't.
Curtis settles, Charlie tries to change subject, cool things
down, holds up his burger.
CHARLIE (CONT'D)
You want half?
No response, Charlie cuts burger in two, holds up both
halves.
CHARLIE (CONT'D)
With or without the bite?
(Sweetly)
Come on. Pick one?
Curtis looks up at Charlie, Curtis is very troubled, tearing
up, last resorts.
CURTIS
This is so fucked up!
Curtis, head down, slides off chair, slowly exits. Charlie
takes a deep breath, tries to calm down.
