Hive Open Mic ( #openmic ) is a global community of music lovers, for musicians and listeners. Each week is a new invitation for expression and connection. We welcome all walks of life, all languages, and all musical genres. Every contributor can be proud of the fact we are building a live music movement, sharing songs with an international audience.

Music is the medicine the world needs right now. At a time in human history when many are lonesome and fearful, our songs bring us safely together on a vibrational level, where we really feel the benefits of togetherness. Our community serves two main audiences: musicians and music fans. Musicians include singer-songwriters, instrumentalists, and other artists expressing themselves musically. We welcome all skill levels. Music fans include casual visitors, avid listeners, art appreciators, and community leaders. Happily, our community includes members from five continents, speaking multiple languages, because music is the universal language.

#2: A Weekly Event Celebrating Live Music

Each week is an invitation for musicians and music fans to connect through live music. New events are announced every Sunday, revealing our weekly theme. This theme is optional, and yet it is meaningful because it helps to focus our artistic efforts as a singular energetic wave. At the end of each week, outstanding entries are showcased in a highlights post. Artists receive upvotes individually, along with encouraging comments.

Why is there a weekly theme?

This is a pressure-free invitation, prompting musicians to journey together into the creative space. For example, our "Fire Starter" theme brings to mind fire and heat, which might inspire: "Light My Fire" by the Doors, or "Start Me Up" by Rolling Stones, or something entirely new. Participants share the energy of the collective current.

In this way, artists working together create a momentous wave: a movement. Their synchronized efforts deliver an energetic presence that is cohesive and colossal. Our "Song of the Sea" theme brought songs that were mystical and emotional, for example. In this way, we create a set of songs that connect us on a vibrational level.

The weekly theme also ensures that all songs are original, made specifically for this event. This lets the listeners know that the music is truly live and vibrant, worthy of their attention and applause. Themes also give the audience a meaningful statement about the music, making it timely, relevant, and relatable.

What are the incentives for participating?

Participating musicians earn rewards through upvotes and supportive comments on their posts, helping to improve reputation scores and develop a fanbase. Musicians gain additional encouragement through our weekly highlights curation.

Hive Open Mic is not a contest, although it encourages excellence. Musicians often display improvements over time, as we perform, present, and promote our music—then we prosper. Each of us realizes opportunities to improve through our practice and our presence.

Our event is inspired by the legendary Steemit Open Mic, hosting 100+ episodes, honoring 1000+ songs, reaching 10,000+ listeners. This epic event was a contest, with a reward pool, which caused some discomforts in the competitive drive, and overwhelm, ultimately leading to its end, when the STEEM dollar value declined. By contrast, Hive Open Mic survives and thrives on its art—ours is purely a music celebration; not a contest.

In a bigger picture perspective, we see global harmony happening here, through our embrace of music from many nations, with multiple languages, touching hearts through the arts. Hive Open Mic is a worldwide movement fueled by passion, instead of money, and this makes the music an authentic love offering.

A Set of Requests to Amp Up Your Music

1. Produce - Begin your video with the words: “This is Hive Open Mic Week [1] and I am [@username],” substituting the current week and your own username, and then offer your song.
2. Present - Publish your video through YouTube (preferred) or another video platform and then post on Hive, writing the story of your live music journey, and tagging #openmic.
3. Promote - Share your link in the comments section of Sunday's open mic invitation in order to be highlighted.
4. Prosper - Enjoy harmony with the Hive community by engaging with musicians and music fans through upvotes and encouraging comments.
