Desert Land Is Dirt Cheap (Pun Intended) Let's Buy A Large Chunk And Start A Highly Advanced Offgrid Community. Who's With Me?

"Let's just buy a huge section of desert somewhere super cheap and use modern technology to create our own energy, food and water. If we build with scale in mind we could form a blueprint for offgrid communities to thrive in any conditions on Earth. If we can do it on Mars we can do it anywhere on Earth. The solutions are so close yet so far away. We just need tons of money and some good people to dedicate their loves to a good cause. Who's with me?" @thedonfreeman

I posted this on facebook and mustered up a lot of volunteers already.

If anyone wants to help take this idea to the next level drop me a message in the comments or on facebook.

Second, that's a nice picture but doesn't have any relevance to living in the desert. No green houses needed. What you need is lots of shade cloth.

And the houses need to protected from the sun and have a large thermal mass to absorb the cool of night.

Third, the desert really isn't cheap.
There is lots of great land that is relatively inexpensive.
The real cost is in that of infrastructure.

I do like the idea of creating permaculture small group living units.
However, you need to go two or three steps beyond what you have pictured above. Its all out there. Just got to bring all the parts together.

Things like compressed earth building blocks (like adobe) are really great for getting those structures you need built fast, quick and cheaply.

Check out my post on underground greenhouses.

And, I will have more on real solutions for actually doing this project, stay in touch.

I love the idea of these off grid communities, and if I ever can afford it, I'd set one up myself.

First, check out greening the dessert.

Totally support the permaculture approach. It's the best system to guide you when creating a community like this.

I'm sure this would be unpopular with many governments because they wouldn't be able to make much money out of you. However there are cheap ways of obtaining land/infrastructure, in Italy for instance. Though there are caveats.

Nice initiative....why don't you consider adopting a desert and greening it by plantation rather than pumping huge money off-grid communities...anyways I appreciate your initiative and following you
